hi all

I can't find too much info on this place. Many of my Korean friends say they've heard of it, but that's about it.

Can anyone tell me more? Namyangu appears to be very close to Seoul on the map...

Namyangju is an arm pit but its an armpit close to Seoul. The traffic is bad, the place is dumpy.

Is it just that it's boring and there is no night life, or is it actually a dump?

People told me the same thing about Wonju... the last city I worked in and I loved it there.

Is this place just a small extension of Seoul?

Namyangju really is a dump. Wonju isn't bad, but a tad boring.

NYJ is dirty, dusty, undergoing a wave of massive construction so the roads are full of all manner of large trucks with aggressive drivers and the place is honestly a collection of buildings people used to pass on the way East.

NYJ was cut in half by the old main highway to the East. They have recently completed the new highway, so the old road is filled with the aforementioned trucks and local, smaller scale commuter traffic.

The city has been slated to become a suburb of Seoul within the nest 10 years., Seoul is expanding east into Kyonggi, Namyangju, and within that time frame the Seoul city officials believe NYJ will function well as a suburb for people who want to live near Seoul, but not in it.

NYJ is a good hour to Guri by bus, and it's a awful ride. Potholed roads, constant hold-ups because of construction....ugh. The residences there seem to be either really old and slummy or new. It is a city of stark contrasts, but in my time living really close to it, found that whole are to be utterly depressing.

It really is a sad little area. It will be nice, but right now it's a dirty, noisy mess.

Thank you for the details. I was hoping to escape the pollution and noise by living outside of Seoul and it sounds as if this place could be just as bad if not worse...
