So, my school knows that I'm leaving after the next semester. So, my co-teacher asks me to look into finding my replacement. I knew exactly who to pick and the person I had in mind happened to be male.

So today, my co-teacher tells me that the school wants a female teacher. Why? He tells me because a male foreign teacher (if he is handsome) will have too much power. WHAT THE *beep*?? I couldn't say anything because he told me this in front of other teachers, the vice principal and principal. I was quite furious though

I had great respect for this school especially since they were willing to hire my pigment enhanced sense but this has really made me pause and wonder how I am OK as a teacher but my White Male Canadian friend isn't.

God....This country really befuddles me....

It's not your job to find them a new teacher, I would just politely explain that to them and end the subject.

i think what he means about too much power is the power to sexually abuse. lately, there has been a lot of high profile cases of male teachers (with no family in Korea) who sexually abuse impressionable underage girls because of his teacher status.

in general, this is why even adult Korean girls many times ask for female teachers because they want to avoid such uncomfortable situations. I think you may have misinterpreted the comments.

obviously from what you said, the students seem to be junior high/high school students.

Yeah, my boss wants to hire a female teacher because of the reason stated above. I even introduced my boss to two male teachers already here (so much cheaper with airfafe and other fees), but still he wants to pay for a female teacher because he already has a male teacher.

Actually, this is an elementary school. I suppose what you said has some credence but I found it to be a bit strange....

And in most of those high profile cases, the offending teacher was either Korean or a Korean-born gyopo.

actually they were white. i am sure u are familiar with the one discovered on xanga, on top of the other high profile cases.

either way, for private lessons to executives, female teachers do get a higher pay than men. i think thats a good thing, because of the male female pay gap that exists in other sectors of society all over the world.

The ones caught at the english villages and summer camps were not white, they were Korean. If you have links to your stories, please provide. I must have missed them the first time around.

What?

Are they worried that all those unmarried korean women teachers will swoon every time he walks by? haha

I'm scratching my head on this issue too.

I have no idea where this explanation came from and I'm not 100% sure who proclaimed male teachers off limits. It could be the principal or the vice principal. Either way, I found it to be really odd.

Oh and I do believe that I might be the only unmarried teacher in the whole school, so even your theory doesn't quite make sense....

It's illegal for the school to discriminate in hiring on the basis of gender. You might consider notifying the Office of Education about that and the fact that the school's trying to get you to find your own replacement.

Yes, one injustice should be equaled with another injustice.

OP, I'd just tell them you found the perfect teacher but if they don't want him, don't ask you for anymore help (said in a nice way).

This makes sense to me. I'm going to find out more intel about this situation and then act accordingly. I just find it so weird since they seemed quite daring in hiring me but have seen to jump back into a hole of ignorance...If I can prevent that from happening, I would feel better leaving this place...

A female teacher is not a potential threat to the school/students IMHO. I'm not in Korea yet, but I'm keenly aware of the issues in question. Some male teachers have posed a sexual threat and I know from a friend working there for years that schools are trying more to guard against such problems.

You make the case about your skin color. Yes hiring you, as a black woman, may at one time have been a leap, due to lack of familiarity and or prejudice against black/brown skins, or just a lack of understanding that a non-white could be a native English speaker, but that skin doesn't carry a threat in any way.

In an ideal world, maybe. Korean hiring practices break MANY of their current laws on discrimination, gender and age are only two of them.
