I was recently offered a university interview and they want me to conduct a demo lesson for elementary students...
I've heard of the whole unigwon phenomenon but really... before I even get the job they are whoring me out?
Is this normal?
I kinda feel as if it's a waste of time to go.

Do they mean elementary as in low level of English students or elementary as in children ... ? I can see nothing wrong in wanting a demo lesson from someone I was looking to employ as a teacher ... I just see it as part of a good interview process from someone who is actually taking the process seriously ...

I was under the assumption that the OP was trying to get a Uni job. Teaching elementary students isn't the same as teaching university students, right? |

Ask them what job this interview is for: a uni position or a PS job, and decide accordingly. |

Many jobs advertised as "university" jobs are on-campus language institutes, or "unigwons." These programs often teach elementary and middle school students as well as university students and other adults. |

That is what I thought ... which is why I thought that maybe there was a misunderstanding over what was meant by elementary ...

It's a demo lesson, a half hour demo lesson, to elementary school students at the university language center.
I know they will be making money off it and apparently they are so busy that if I get lost there is no one available for me to call. Sounds like a joke to me.
I looked over the benefits offered in their ad and it is no better than my current public school gig, aside from smaller classes and no coteacher (which may or may not be a plus).
I think I'm gonna tell them to look elsewhere. |
