Its like this:

Linux is clearly superior to Microsoft Windows in all aspects but why is it that Microsoft still has a 90% share of the OS market?

iPods aren't the best players on the market but they got the MOST 3rd party accessories. Everything is designed and meant to be used with an iPod. Everything from BMW factory stereos, XBox 360, to freaking corkboard
(http://www.potterybarn.com/products/p9170/index.cfm?pkey=cfurhofsmt).

Personally, I was anti-iPod before ever owning one. My previous MP3 players have been Samsung Yepp, Creative Zen, Sandisk Sansa, and Cowon iAudio.

My Samsung Yepp was the smallest and sexiest.
The Creative Zen was a beast with features.
The Sandisk Sansa was a good player, but not as impressive as the rest.
The Cowon iAudio I had was freaking awesome. The only reason I gave it up because 2GB was the largest capacity in the model I had.

I gotta say, after being anti-iPod, I bought a Nano 4gb for $100. I absolutely love this thing. The Cowon was a better mp3 player, but the iPod just had so many extras that I could buy. Silicone cases, plug and play stereos, car adapters, etc...etc...

My only beef with iPod is the rechargeable battery. Other than that, it is a perfect player.

As far as Hd based players go, apple rules the industry world wide. Maybe the kool-aid simply is good?

Its called hype. Americans will do anything to promote their products.

As will any other nationality. Promotion is part of marketing any product. Strange that so many other companies promote the iPod by creating a massive range of accessories for it and no other products. Compare the Creative Zen and the Microsoft Zune both are high selling ipod alternatives but niether has a fraction of the sales (beating microsoft by a 1000 miles is no easy task) nor do they have many availible accessories in comparison. I don't even know why I continue to quote you as it is clear from the apple vs pc thread that you have an irrational dislike for apple products.

you don't HAVE to use iTunes with iPods, although it is probably what most people use.

i do find the nano and regular iPod overpriced, but for gym use i'm reiterating the convenience of the built-in clip that comes with the new shuffle. and the biggest problem with the other nanos isn't an issue with the shuffle -- battery life.

Firstly, nobody hype their products quite like Apple does, after all marketing is where all their money is going into rather than technological innovation. What's worst is that people's perception of buying a good reliable product has been distorted by such marketing, monopoly and outright lies by the company and its fanboys.

Secondly, those accessory makers all come from China where the iPod is made. They make accessories for any brand such as samsung, nokia, ericcsson, sony, creative etc. If they can't sell media players, they'll sell something to accompany them. Apple never really anticipated what the Chinese would do, but it certainly helped build the iPod popularity to what it is today.

Because we can really do without the constant Apple advertising such as the "beating microsoft by a 1000 miles...blah blah blah". Rolling Eyes

I know Creative is popular in SE Asia, Australia and even Japan, but they don't advertise anywhere near the extend that Apple does. Their target audience is different. Most of their customers get their inside information on the latest technologies from forums, websites and magazines. Apple uses TV, internet and basically anything that runs on batteries.
