A British firm has transplanted the Calgary skyline from Western Canada to South Korea for a recent ad in a popular magazine.

In the Economist, a full-page ad encouraging businesses to set up offices in Gwangyang is set to a shot of the Calgary skyline, complete with the Calgary Tower.

The ad also flags several potential business ventures for the area, including steel and even shipbuilding, which it places roughly near the Stephen Avenue Mall.

Bruce Graham, president and CEO of Calgary Economic Development, called having the city's skyline borrowed "a first."

"I had no idea that we would have our skyline lifted and dropped into Korea," he told CBC News. "It's a first for me, in 20 years in this business, that I've seen somebody's skyline appear in another city's ad."

Graham said initially he thought, "Hey, this isn't right," but now considers it a compliment.

The firm designing the ad could have picked any of hundreds of city skylines, Graham said, but picked Calgary.

"This is a testament to our city and what we're doing here."

Graham said Calgary Economic Development doesn't mind if the firm uses their city as a sample, but he would like to see a line in the ad identifying the shot as Calgary.

The South Korean city has a population of 138,000 and is home to Gwangyang Steel Works, which is thought to be the largest such facility in the world.

I live a half hour from Gwangyang and have some killer photos of the city, the best of which is a breathtaking sunset over the mountains, with a soccer game at the stadium in the foreground.

Get a decent photographer and Gwangyang offers more scenic views than bland Calgary; did my undergrad days in Lethbridge an hour or so south of Calgary and in all my visits I never could describe Calgary as beautiful, stark yes, yellow hilly yes, but grim compared to greener, more mountainous areas.

One of the hogwons I worked at ages ago called itself "Yale University Academy" and draped outsize pictures of blond american models (randomly downloaded from the internet) on the outside of the building, claiming they were teachers working there. Laughing

The korean appetite for plagiarism and misrepresentation knows no bounds...

calgary is worse. you can't compare a country based on immigration to a country thats had the same basic population for 5000 years.

Why? Are Koreans genetically inferior and morally stunted when compared to "us" because they are in-bred? Is this what you are suggesting?

Well it was a cultural argument. Most countries, usually take the native culture and incorporate it into a part of their own. But where do you see native americans? or First Peoples? exactly. its a cultural argument when you look at it.

Do you think Koreans were just 'always there'? Do you think they had no interaction with others?

The 5000 years/one people line is racist Korean racist garbage. Don't believe a word of it.

Calgary is a lovely city. If you are Asian and look like a thug, you can't get into Cowboys, it is true. If you are black and look like a thug, you can't get in either. Fact of life, over there. They had enough Asian shooting Asians (as did Edmonton) for a lifetime in the 90's. Clubs adapted.

Tuck in your pants and don't comb your hair like a thug and you'll be fine.

cultural lineage is whats important. the only person making a racial argument is you guys.

the cultural lineage of native americans and first people's died. that is the root of the racism in calgary.

Maybe you had try and better explain your position.

I've lived in the USA, Turkey, Canada (many places), Singapore and traveled to many others. I've never, ever come across a nation/people as amazing aggressively racist as I did in Korea. Korean "culture" is racist to the core. Racism defines their culture. It is their culture.

I can admit, yes, in Calgary you will meet people who dislike blacks etc etc. In Korea, it will be the vast majority of the population. And no amount of Korean logic will ever make that ok. Being in-bred over 5000 fictitious years doesn't excuse what happens in the ROK.

You can't say "Calgary is the most racist city in the world" and then try and qualify it away.

Give Moscow a try sometime. They kill non-whites on the subway and the police don't investigate. All the time.

Proportion and perspective..

omfg... yes... I agree with the sentiment (it sure seems like it!) if not the fact of the matter

You don't need to be asian or black. If you're a 'good ol' white boy' like me, you get people spouting the most racist offensive stuff, thinking you'd of course agree with them as a fellow whitey.

For a city of its size, in a nation built on immigration and diversity, Calgary is surprisingly racist. I have countless specific incidents I could cite if anyone would like a list.

I am a good ol' white boy like you. I've found the place to be full of retards, to be honest. But, in the WORLD? Coming from a KOREAN?

Nope. Gotta call bs on that.

After spending a few years in Asia I was really forced to define and see racism in a different way.

Back home racism was anyone who didn't like someone because they were a different colour.

In Asia, I see racism as a common line of thought running through a population that they are somewhat superior and/or different than others

I've met Calgarians all over the place. I have yet to meet one that said he hated blacks or asians because his white blood was somehow genetically superior. They were usually just IGNORANT hicks.

I've met Asians all over the world. While many were highly educated they certainly spouted out the most insane sh#t about Japanese intenstines being longer than a white man's. Koreans being being smarter or whatever cause they use metal chopsticks and thus superior than yada yada yada yada.

While Calgary may be full of HICKS, Asia is where the RACISTS are.

I wish people would stop throwing the word about so easily. I don't like Eskimos, they freak me out. Wink I'm a racist. Never mind the fact that scientifically I know there is no basis for superiority in our genes, I don't find whites unique in any way, my gf is Japanese and my dog is Polish. Nope, I'm a racist.
