I think I posted about this question once before although perhaps not in exactly this way but the problem is still unresolved and I want to bring it up again.
I'm using a Toshiba laptop both here at my high school and also at home. I notice that any time I go to either Google.com or blogger.com, that there's always friggin' Korean on the sites. And obviously I can't read Korean.
I don't see any Korean on the www.typepad.com site when I go to it to post to my primary blog. No Korean at all. But I see it on www.blogger.com. Does that make sense?
Surely we don't have to put up with that.........do we?
Is there some way to work around it? If there is I'd sure like to know.
I'm also noticing that there are many 'https' (i.e. 'secure sites') that I simply can't browse to. One of the tech support guys at godaddy, when I was talking to him on the phone and trying to buy a domain, told me that there is a virus that gets into some comuters which prevents it from going to secure sites. Is that the likely culprit or could it be something else.
If my memory serves me correctly, there is another computer here in school that will take me to a secure site (but I can't double check it right now). Has anybody else noticed that phenomenon?
Also....re: buying a computer: I might be buying one or two pretty soon. One of the guys here said he'd help me build my own PC...which I intend to use strictly to play a game (Generals/Tiberium Wars). It's my understanding that it's not possible to buy a laptop that's strong enough to play graphics intensive games (like that one is). Is that correct?
If it is, then I'll probably want to buy a new laptop for my general school and personal work. Anybody have any recommendations of where I might do that in Seoul and how much I'd need to spend?
BTW....I'm going to try a life, interactive podcast tonight at 7:30 pm. Anybody involved in ESL in Korea is invited (or anybody who likes salsa dancing). It's going to be on the www.talkshoe.com platform. You can get the details by going to my blog at http://wanderingsalsero.typepad.com .
Keep those feet movin'

The Korean Google page has a "go to google.com in English" button. Bottom right. |

The problem on blogger.com is that it sets your default language to Korean. If you log in, there is a link somewhere under your profile picture to change the language setting. Problem is, it's all in Korean. What I did was hover over the different links and look at the bottom of the browser whereit shows the URL until I saw one that said language. When you get to the language selection screen, all the languages will also be in Korean. English is 영어, and it will have the country name in parentheses. 미국 is USA, 캐네다 (I think) is Canada, 영국 is the UK. Good luck, this was something that drove me crazy when I first got here! |

The laptop will cost more than an equally geared desktop, but there isn't any reason why it wont play graphics intensive games. I'm running an Intel 2.16ghz dual core, 2gB RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GO video card and have yet to come across a game I can't play at 30 fps. My battery life sucks, but I only use this laptop as a desktop that I can take home on the plane, so it is always plugged in. |

My school computer always goes to www.google.com but my laptop seems to flip flop between google.com and google.co.kr. Couldn't the cookies have something to do with it? Like if your computer erases the cookies for google.com it will go back to google.co.kr? I'm not computer savvy but that's my theory, I guess....
Am I correct? |
