Sure, there are nicer restaurants now than there used to be when I first visited it in the mid-90's...but there are also far more gangster types, both Korean and foreign. Far more winos and druggies, too. So, yeah. I don't think it 'rules' anymore.

Itaewon certainly doesn't 'rule' when you compare it to other municipalities in the world. Matter of fact, it was kind of a hole. That said, it was easily the most cosmopolitan place in the nation, and hence a nice refuge from the bland monotony that is Korea.

I'm long past the stage of going to Ittaewon just to see foreign faces. Homesick? I live here.

The Freaks Come Out At Night - Hut Hut..
On this week off, I see many of the foreigners during the day that I usually only see during the night. They look different.

Cause you're sober in the day.

Everywhere else too. It could be worse. At least we don't overrate it here. Itaewon rules! Maybe your first here.

Itaewon is only good for the variety of food and drink. Apart from that, it seems to be a rather sad reflection on human society.

Yea, Itaewon is really cool. There is no other place like it in Korea. Many friendly open minded Koreans speak English fluently or very well there which makes for good times of making Korean friends and learning more about Korean culture and society. This is tough to do outside of Itaewon as people just don't speak English or may not be very open minded and I lack the ability to fluently speak Korean.

Lots of foreigners; in fact there are enough that you can feel like you're at home temporarily such as in the 3 Alley pub. Itaewon is a very pleasant break from every day life in Korea though living there might be a little expensive, but it is a real English speaking community that offers many socialization opportunities, many foreigner friendly services, and is a highly diverse place like you might find in many other cities and countries.

Lots of good imported beer and food, but it is very expensive and you could blow your whole take home pay if you go out in Itaewon most nights of the week. We are talking $8 US for a German beer and $20 for a hot meal while it's easy to sock away 6 to 8 of those Erdingers and then eat a meal which adds up to $80 or more in a night out. Very pricey, but a great place to go.

Yeeah.

I was in Korea in 2005 and have fond memories of Itaewan ! I met good friends just walking down the street or eating in Burger King. Sounds cheezy? But it's true.

I remember a crazy woman who would speak to herself in Burger King. She followed me to my hotel one day.

I also remember a very short woman (about 65) who accosted me at night for some 'fun'.

I remember taking out 2 nigerian girls, an austrailan and a japanese tourist Very Happy

Good Times
