similar to this Thread I have decided to form an informal group to discussion teaching theory and practice. THis group will be open to anyone interested in improving thier teaching and learning about the theory behind what you practice. You do not need to be in an MA program, but if you are it will most defineately be beneficial to you.

Myself and the_beaver will be meeting regardless of whether others join us or not. I was talking to beav this afternoon and we decided that a rotating coffeeshop location wouold be best. First meeting would be the weekend after this one, Oct 26 (Sunday) say around 11am. Earlier is better for me as I have church to go to at 3pm. I figured saturdays are out as some hogwon teachers work on Saturdays. Anyhow if everyone wnated to we could move it to Saturdays as well.

What Myself and the beav decided to do is read one chapter out of a book each week (maybe every second week) and then meet to discuss the questions at the back of each unit. The book that we have chosen has a diverse range of topics of immediate use to the language teacher and is available at Kyobo as well as Bandi & Lundi for approx 25,000 won.

The book is Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language Marianne Celce-Murcia
It's green and got a big red apple on the cover.

let me know if you are interested and we can arrange a meeting place that is easiest for everyone to get to. this will of course be done in Seoul.

Two qualms:

#1-This is geared towards teaching adults, isn't it?

#2-October 26th ain't happenin' for me. It's one of those days...

I don't think so. It's looking at theory and then discussing the questions at the end of a chapter. There are 36 chapters written by different authors. I see the approach being one of choosing a chapter not necessarily going sequentially through the book and reading it, then discussing to help congeal your ideas. This should also help by getting others opinions and questions about issues that you may not understand.

some of the chapter titles include

  • Communicative Language Teaching for te Twenty-first Century
  • Teaching Oral Skills
  • Teaching Children Literacy Skills in a Second Language
  • Experiential and Negotiated Language Learning
  • Language Learning Styles and Strategies (my dissertation will be on this topic)
  • Teaching Adults
  • planning lessons
  • Reflective Teaching in ELT

There are 2 units devoted to Children and 2 devoted to adults, other than that the rest are applicable to any context.

Well if you can't make it on the 26th, there is always the next time. I don't want this to be an exclusive thing. I see people joining in at anytime and of course skipping/missing weeks as personal life interferes with the schedule.

*edit* I also think that this would be a great opportunity for networking and looking for jobs, resume reviews & suggestions.

Central is good. Myself and Beav both live by Ewha which is very central. Chongno, & Myongdong are also very centrally located.

Count me in. I've just sent off 6 applications for various TESOL Uni courses in Oz. Don't know that I'll have much to contribute to the group but I'm up for plenty of moochin' off you guys.

I'm thinking of making it tentatively for the 26th at starbucks Ewha. If you have a better alternate location let me know and we can move it.

Keep me posted if you can make it. when you have the book look through the units and we can decide which one is best for us to discuss.

Last night at the gathering I was talking with Waterbaby & CrazyLemon girl about my teaching discussion group. It looks like we are going to get enough people for this to fly. More are welcome to join us. but for now we will start like this.

Just a reminder that the book is Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language (third edition) edited by Marianne Celce Murcia.

We will be looking at random units inside the book rather than going sequentially and decided the next chapter at the end of the current weeks meeting. However for the first time I will choose. We will read unit one Language Teaching Approaches: An Overview don't forget to look at the questions and be prepared to talk about them as best as you can.

Alos to make this a more personalized actiivity I think it would be very good to talk about Activity One where you look at a textbook that you are using and describe which approach to teaching it uses based on the readings. PLease bring the book if you can so that others can see it, especially as we may be unfamiliar with it. If you can't bring the book, we still would like you to come out for the discussion.

I'd be interested in joining the discusion group but Saturdays or later on Sunday are better times for me. Ewha Starbucks is fine. I travel from Pochon, North Kyonggi-do so location is not that critical. Anyways, sounds like a good idea.

Welcome aboard Bergstrom. I have to go to church at 3 pm on Sundays and need to leave my home by 2:30 so later Sunday is not good for me.

Saturdays are fine with me, if everyone else is okay. Ring in and let us know so we can finalize it.
