Just a note to you all. There is currently a Korean University (codename: WonkWanking) offering a job that states a Canadian dollar translation of the actual Korean pay instead of a proper American $ translation.

ie: That means that Korean 1.7 million Korean Won per month translates into $2000 Canadian. NOT American. Which would be around $1500 (real American dollars) per month. Be strangely internationally informed!#?*

When I asked the University about this I recieved this email:

"dude,
we "bleeped"up
leave it alone
read a book
somethin'
later,

(signed)
an american desperately lacking editorial oversight"

Dave, please don't edit this! It's a real comment from a real University, (someone apparantly in or out of control) from a real staff.

I'm cool enough not to "out" the, quote, "dude" for this silliness.

Respectfully,

The Grand Dude

?

"Proper American $ translation"? The ad doesn't say anything about the dollar amount being in U.S. dollars, and given that the industry in Korea is dominated by Canadians, what's your point?

They also state the Korean currency amount, so it's not misleading anyway.

A person in an email agrees that the ad isn't listed in US dollars, and you are critical that they didn't use proper grammar, yet your posting makes English teachers around the world run in fear.

Was this what it actually said? I mean that some American was trying to deceive foreign English teachers?

I find it strange that people would intentionally try to mislead people, admit it, tell them to go away, and then claim their nationality..

Gord,

C'mon

Dollars are American. The only Queen to grace an American currency might possibly be Thomas Jefferson.

Any other "dollar" equivelency might only be offered by Jean Chretian. Apparantly he's got the Queen in his pocket.

Anyway. Anyway.

Offering dollar equivelencies in anything other than American dollars is just plain, well, not bankerly.

Just trying to get the boy right...right?

Not to piss everybody off.

If we're going to get anywhere, a real translation of the Korean Won would work for all. If you all want us to use a country other than the US to translate dollars that's cool.

I've heard that Martian dollars are pegged and near the curve for international trading.

I saw the same ad, and as a Canadian I could tell what they were up to with the 1.7=$2000 thing. It felt it was misleading.

But Gord's suggestion that Korea is overrun with Canadians and therefore the Canadian dollar has become Korea's 2nd currency does not hold water. Show me a Korean job ad - ANYWHERE - that offers a conversion to a dollar that is anything other than the US greenback, unless stated otherwise.

In fact, 1.7 million won is $2154.
Australian Dollars. Lots of Australians here.

If they really wanted to jazz the ad up, they could tell us that 1.7 million won is $11,497.
Which it is, in Hong Kong.
