... The guy who called was from my local (Anseong) area code, sounded like an older guy (40s to 50s), and spoke in badly broken English. He asked me if my name was David. I told him it was. He said his name was something that sounded like "Hasao". He asked me if I was in Korea as a student or a worker. I told him I was a teacher. He asked me if I taught college or... and trailed off; couldn;t think of the needed word. "Junior high", I interjected.
Then he started to babble about something--- caught the phrase "Japanese and English" conversation. Then it sounded like he said "I am Korean. For some Koreans, Japanese and English conversation...." something. Then he asked me if my name was David.... "Rey-ischeee", which is bad, almost unrecognizeable butchery of my last name. He paused as if he were reading it off of a piece of paper, like a telemarketer would. He continued to babble about "Japanese and English" conversation, always pairing the words "Japanese and English", in a questioning tone. "I don't speak Japanese", I interjected.
He then babbled some more, using the phrase "English conversation" repeatedly. He then said "I like English conversation. I am Korean. Next time I call... English conversation?" I said sure, and he said "good bye" thank you, about four times. I kept replying "goodbye", but he wasn't satisfied until I said "You're welcome" instead of goodbye.
Throughout the conversation, I kept asking him who he was and what he wanted. These questions were ignored.
Was this guy a telemarketer? A recruiter? How would he have gotten my number?
Should I worry? Should I reverse trace his number if he bothers me again, file some sort of inquiry? |

My first concern is that it's an immigration officer.
My second concern is it's supermo/lostinnonsan. |

My cousin from P.E.I. and I used to get phone calls from a Mr. Kim back in 2004-2005. Kim lives near the small Chinatown in the Daksan area of Seoul. He met my cousin in front of the G.M.-Daewoo dealership there and was relentless with his free English-ee telephone calls.
Eventually, he asked both of us one night if we wanted to have sex with children and if we were druggies. I told him I'd kill him if I ever ran into him and my cousin's lunatic Korean wife-uh told him off in Korean to the Nth Degree.
I get calls from locals occaisionally about buying stuff. I lie to them and say that I can not speak Korean at all. |

Next time he calls, just say "Why?" to everything he says or asks. Only that. |

Most likely way he got your number was from somebody at your place of work. He wants free English practice by the sounds of it. |

I received both of those, too. The one I got tonight said Donny's azz tastes like apricots, along with some other dirty sayings. |

HA HA yeah I did something like that to some Kokrean guy who wanted me to "hang out and speak with his kids in English" or something or other (for free), so I was just "huh? why? oh? I don' t know!" HA HA it was funny, then he wanted me to talk to his kids on the phone so he put his kids on and the kid was like
"yeoboseyo?"
and I was like "yeoboseyo?" and the kid was like "yeoboseyo?" and I was like "yeoboseyo?" and it went on like this for while... i could hear his father ordering his kid to 'say something in english' to me and the kid had nothing to say and was dumbfounded by my 'yeoboseyo's' then the father got on and i guess he was so frustrated he ended the phone call and never called again,
those kinds of koreans are the most annoying, but dealing with them is a bit fun |

Yeah man I've used both of those tricks a few times. In my last apartment I'd get random phone calls just about every day. Usually they woke me up, so I got to start off my day with a bit of hilarity. This one lady called up and was asking to speak to someone. I did the yoboseyo a few times, then I was like, "Aaahhh.. Kim Yuna?" in a way that it sounded like I knew who she was asking for. Then back to the yoboseyo. I heard a guy barking at her in the background and she hung up.
Two minutes later, guess who? The guy. He was all frustrated, demanding to speak to Kim Yuna. So I asked why. Again, and again. Then the feigned understanding, "aaaahhh.. Kim Yuna? Why?" I think he was pissed when he hung up. |

Yeah, I got one of those when I first landed here in 03. Some guy on the pretense of a wrong number but then added my name and asked if I was an English teacher. He never called back, thank god. |
