What do you think? YBM is outsourcing for the public school. I don't think its a bad deal, but want some experience opinions.
The job offers 2.5million won, 28 vacation days, 25 teaching hours a week, 30 working, 700,000 won housing allowance for my wife and I, but no airfare:
--------->Update<---------
Its going great. Working in a normal public school, doing normal things, at the normal hours (8:30-4:30). The only extra things we have to do is the monthly meetings, which are boring and useless, but gives us a chance to meet up, and we have 1 week summer and winters camps instead of 3 week ones.
I'm VERY happy that we accepted these contracts, and I love my school.

The pay and vacation days are good
BUT
I wouldn't sign it because.
There are no set working hours and the employer can change them as they so desire. Want to work 9-5? sorry this week you must work 2-10 sorry.
25 hours, no thank you that's open to abuse, 25 classes thank you very much
Required to do an overnight camp for a week for no extra money. No thanks.
Unpaid orientation, O.K maybe you can deal with that.
3 weeks training a year and workshops every month. When where and for how long are these. Are they during normal working hours or are you going to be pulling some 10-12 hour days, for no extra pay.
Last but not least the governing language of the contract is Korean. So any of the English in the contract could be mistranslated stuff, that could burn!
I wouldn't touch it. But I bet they get somebody.

It's at a public school and the working hours are 9-6. I know there is always a possibility they can change it.

This is 5 x 50min classes per day. So 25 classes per week.

They might get me The money and vacation are good, and so is the location. I've had most of my concerns addressed, but I should ask about the monthly trainings. The camps are included in the monthly salary, and the working hours are 9-5. Its 30 Hours a week, so anything more is overtime. |

O.K get that written into the contract, no more than 5 50 min classes a day. Is it a high school? Elementary school classes are 40 minutes each.

??? Did I read it incorrectly? The contract says the camp hours are from 9am to 9:30pm and the teachers cannot get overtime for this. |

Yeah it says 9-9:30, 9-5 is working/teaching, and then the rest is supervision, which I guess kind of sucks, but the school board is giving the long vacation time and the high salary to make up for this.
I'm going to call and ask some questions.... |

I receive the same salary as that but get 8 days less vacation. No unpaid compulsory overtime. Just a max of 25 classes a week. Set work hours that can only be changed with my agreeement etc.
Yes you should definitely ask questions. |

Just for comparision's sake...so you know what else IS out there.
I get the same salary and more vacation. My hours are between 9-5. Period. Then I go home. 12 hours at camp? My hours are 9-2:20 and that includes a 40 minute break PLUS one hour for lunch. 3 hours and 40 minutes teaching per day for camp. Granted that is for two weeks, but you are still doing more hours at camp for that one week...
And during regular time I only teach 21 classes per week, not 25. And that's during a good week...at least twice a month there's some test or special day or whatever that knocks my hours down to under 20 per week.
Nor do I have monthly trainings.
It's being sponsored by YBM (Your Blood Money) so that tells you all you need to know.
Your call...I'd give this a pass. |

This is just a bad job of being subcontracted out by YBM.
If you want a public job, get one and never mind being subbed out as a slave worker for a hakwon.
You lose all the benefits of a public school job and get screwed by ybm when the school changes the schedule.
And no airfare,
no home leave (2 weeks more paid vacation + plane tickets that public teachers get)
Annual raises are way less than we get and there are no level up benefits for renewals.
PASS THIS ONE BIG TIME. Your losses over what a properly contracted public teacher gets amount to millions of won (per person) in lost benefits and unpaid overtime for the extras that are required of you. |

Hey Acorn,
It's me from PWEB...Glad to see you posted this for other people's opinions ...
I have been really mulling this over ...
It's really a shame that YBM is handling the contracts for this region...
By the way, I know for a fact that this contract is fixed...it's unflexible...another teacher had disagreed with some of the stuff and was told there is no way of changing this or negotiation ...
I want you to know that if this seems acceptable to you and need to get a contract ASAP, go for it...But if you have a little time at your disposal, then try to get another public school job...
All of us know it's bad news when a hagwon chain (of not reputable standing) is handling contracts for a public school.
Finally, the students in this region are more difficult to teach as I mentioned before on PWEB, not to say they are impossible, but they discipline issues particularly at the middle school levels 1 and 2.
You have a BIG decision on your hands ...
Best of Luck in the Future....
Remember , if worst comes to worst, you can always leave, but myself and my partner did it for a year and the guy before us and my current native english speaker collegue that has been here since March... |

I agree. One quick question- How are jobs at public schools being "managed" by outside companies? |

It was my understanding that its illegal to subcontract in South Korea, so how is it that YBM is handling the public school hiring. Based on YBM's rep in Korea I wouldn't sign this contract for love nor money, purely on the no airfare alone I wouldn't sign it. Tha's a big chunk of cash you have to cough up so that you can come and work for them, no thanks! |

2.5 for 55 hours including teaching hours? Doesn't really sound that good really..I'm getting 2.3 for 40 hours at a public school..and it'll be my first year teaching..ever. Plus, no airfare? You can do better. You can make 2.4 with EPIK...if you have your TESOL cert. Besides, the feedback on YBM... |
