I just got my final paycheck at my public school, and did not get my severance pay. I am on vacation until the end om y contract, which is next Tuesday. Is it normal for the school to wait until the last day of your contract to pay your completion bonus ?

Yep. They interpret physical presence in Korea at the end of the contract to be necessary to legally establish fulfillment of contract.

Well my hagwon aren't going to give me my severance pay until 3 months after I leave. What's the chances of me actually getting it??

None, that's against the law. Call the L.B. if you need help. Make sure you get your pension too.

It is perfectly legal for you to ask to get your severance paid one week prior to the completion of contract. For them to wait three months is totally illegal. Contact the labor board now and sort it out. Btw, who was your school and where did you work? This will help future teachers there? Did you keep in touch with other teachers at the school? They might be able to pressure the employer to pay you severance. Good luck.

Well I am still there at the moment, I dont leave until November, so I should hopefully get the money in February. It states in my contract that the money will be paid into my bank at home 3 months after I leave. This was my first contract in Korea and I suppose I just expected this to b normal. I dont think there is much I can do about it if I signed the contract.

Well I will be back in Korea maybe 3 months after I leave this job, (once I've spent my money on gas cookers in Thailand!!). If they do not pay me, can I pursue it once I return?

pension is paid 3 months later sometimes, by the korean gov't. that isn't a problem. but severance you should get before you leave, in time to wire it home.

Yes, but like I said, my contract states my severance pay will be paid into my home bank account 3 months after I leave. I reckon I wont get it, they also took a 900,00 Won deposit (300,000 from first 3 wages), I reckon I can kiss that goodbye also
