I am looking to start teaching in Jeju. Does anyone know the average salary for a starter teacher? I have figured out it is a bit lower than Seoul. Are there any places I should be wary of?
Next I am from Atlanta, GA, US a fairly large city but I live in the Suburbs. I am not a big drinker or partier but I like to get out and about once a month here, probably more so there. What are the chances I will be greatly underwhelmed by Jeju? Are there of restaurants, shopping? Decent grocery that is not expensive? Does it cost more to live there than other places since it is a tourist destination? Last but not least as a Black American woman would I do better here than say Seoul when it comes to being socially accepted? |

I lived about five minutes by car from Jeju City in a smaller city named Shin Jeju City. The latter has a foreign foods grocery store, a nice pub/cafe named Jenny's Cafe who's warm-hearted owner, besides serving some tasty Western dishes and lovely cocktails and foreign beers, lived in England and on the Continent for at least a few years, and about fifty North Americans.
I saw about five People of Colour at a weekend E.F.L. workshop. |

I taught there for awhile after living in the burbs of Seoul. It's recommended if you like:
the ocean
black rocks
goofy looking, big-eyed statues everywhere
eating raw fish and or pork
lots of open space
hiking (but this is anywhere in Korea)
Not recommended if you want
culture
foreigners
diversity
fun
foreign stuff
interesting activities
The average pay is 2.0. Seoul is a bit more, but is also more expensive.
I found Jeju boring and isolating. You can meet up with other foreigners, true. But there's just not that much to do. I came back to Bundang (IMO, the best place to live in Korea...sssshhhhh.) after 3 months.
FWIW, I'd rather be black in Seoul than anywhere else in Korea. |
