|
I'm riding to Sokcho next weekend and am looking for suggestions on which highways/roads to take to get there from NE Seoul. I have 5 days off and so a night in the mountains would be cool too if anyone has suggestions of a hotel there. Also, if anyone has other activities that are fun to do in the vicinity of Sokcho, please post them here. Thanks |

SorakSan (big mountain) is just up the street from Sokcho, you could try hiking the outside route. I think the inner route is closed for fire season right now, but I could be wrong.
Your motorcycle route question might be better served in the official motorcycle thread. |

I took Highway 46 to Seoraksan last summer and it was great. There's a great guest house to stay at some place just before heading into the park -- you go thru some little area where you'll be driving next to a nice clear river -- there'll be some motels around -- keep going, then just before all the buildings and businesses disappear, you'll see a nice looking motel off to the right as you go over a bridge. Get off there and go on the little road to that, but keep going past it. At the end is "Happy Road Guest House".
Sorry, I don't remember exactly how to get there -- those are the best directions I can give!
They've got clean rooms with bunk beds, they make a good meal, you can chill in the river, lay in a hammock.
And across the way, they light up the mountains at night!

thanks for the tips and the pictures. i think i'll try and find that guesthouse for my first night and maybe go hiking up seoraksan if the weather cooperates (it hasn't been to nice lately).
Any more ideas along the East coast (next to the "East" Sea {or is that the Sea of Japan?, nevermind, different topic altogther} ) |

cool... let me know if you succeed in finding it!
and yeah, definitely bring a good map -- or 2 or 3 -- sometimes one is better than another.
no recommendations along the coast -- i went during "vacation week" last year so i stayed inland for fear of the crowds. |

Well, I took Highway 46 most of the way to the East coast until I came to Inje (one of the junction cities of Highway 44 & 46). I made the mistake of looking at my map and deciding to take the 44 because of the mineral springs in Osaek. Highway 44 from Inje to the East coast is in Horrible condition. Many sections are under construction requiring you to drive thru muddy gravel in areas only wide enough for one lane of traffic. I HIGHLY advise anyone taking a ride to the East coast to stay off this section and instead take the other route thru Seoraksan Park to the north.
C.O. - unfortunately I couldn't find the place you mentioned. I looked all over but I ended up staying at a different place.
To anyone else thinking about taking a vacation to the east coast to escape Seoul, do it. Getting away from the city really re-energizes. Also, to get there from Seoul only really takes ~5-6 hours taking a nice easy pace with a few breaks for you and your bike. (Although I wouldn't recommend too much driving in Korea at night)

Avoid 44. Drove that route in a car last week and it's hell to drive along.
East coast is a pain in the ass. There are a few routes along the sea, but most roads you see leading to beaches and ports are dead ends and functional ports, not touristy ones. Just cruise down route 7 past Uljin and it'll get better. Mangyang Beach halfway between Uljin and Pyeonghae is a nice place to make a pit stop. From Pyeonghae, you could also check out route 88 heading to Yangyang. The mountain pass is pretty curvy, though, and might be a pain in the ass on a bike. Still, if you're intending to go to Andong or Juwangsan or something, it's a nice way to get there. |

The official motorcycle thread sucks. You do a search and you get the whole darn thing. |
