| There is no such thing as energy independence. Energy is a commodity sold on the world market. Locally produced energy will be a little cheaper but not by much. |

That took until post 15. Happily, dogshed put it succinctly.
I'll just add that corn-based ethanol still costs more oil than it produces. It is not a serious path towards energy independence. |

Your all forgetting one important thing:
The rich US oil tycoons will do anything to obstruct research into alternate fuels etc, they will do anything to keep their pockets lined. |

Energy independance means freedom from the need for foreign energy sources.....it does not mean a wholesale abandonment of traditional fossil fuels.... it means a gradual expansion of available options including things like solar, bio-fuels, wind, etc.
None of these alternatives offer a complete solution....only small steps along the way.
If we are ever going to get to a position of independance, we have to get serious about things like conservation, recycling, and the exploration of alternatives.
15 years ago, my honda accord got 40mpg. What improvements have been made by the automotive industry? Not much I guess.
People have to stop buying gas-guzzling, roadhogs and choose more efficient means of transportation. I suppose the only way to encourage this is through higher gas prices. |

That used to be the case - the US is getting better and more efficient at it.
Plus there is always ethanol for Brazil. Brazil has been very sucessful at it.
When the US is serious about alternative energy things will change. |

Yes Boeing , General Electric , the US auto industry , Archer Daniels Midland , and all the alternative energy companies on the Nasdaq would allow that.  |
