Weed is just as harmful/harmless as anything else. If you go overboard with it, sure, you'll have negative consequences. If you use it responsibly, it's fine.

The only problem I have with it is that human brains are still developing up until about the age of 22. Any kind of strong mind-altering agent is going to interrupt the process of a young person coming to grips with the world.

But I've smoke a ton of pot and done nearly every popular drug, and I'm sure my children will find out about that (assuming I ever have kids--big if). That would be all the justification they need to try something. I remember the first time I did acid and thinking beforehand, well Dad's done it before, how bad can it be? Same thing my first time smoking pot.

"Listen Bondgirl, dope gives you an excuse for being boring and wasting your afternoons eating cold baked beans straight from the can. Now let's go hiking, and on the way home we'll have dinner with some interesting people and then go see some theatre".
That was my parents' approach. I wasted a couple of afternoons as all good kiwi youngsters do, and then went back to my sports and music. No big deal -just be an active parent and your kids'll make good decisions for themselves.

No need to tell him anything. I'll be hotboxing his developing ass inside the womb by blowing smoke up his mothers cooter.

Gotta build up that tolerance.

Like alcohol, I'd hope that my children waith until they're 18.

But reality will sit in. I won't encourage it, but I will educate them. And hopefully the love and support I give them while growing up will help them to make the best decisions possible.

But once they turn 18, I'll gladly drink a beer or smoke some herb wth my kids.

What did I tell me kids about Pot. I told them I have never had so much as one toke. That if the smoke it and I find out, I will reach down their throats and rip their lungs out.

That's a good approach. If you make out it's really really terrible, they're going to find out it's not and not take you, or it, seriously enough. I'd try to give them balanced information, but instill in them the danger of becoming too acquainted with it. If they take after me, they'll be OK. The friends I hung out with as a youth got into it, but it never really appealed to me. I'd do it, but it just made me sleepy and hungry. Never understood its appeal. Wondered if I'm not genetically susceptible. I can take it or leave it, and mostly I leave it, though I give myself the option to enjoy it from time to time (which now means once every 2 years or so). But if they take after their dad, they may well become weed fiends. It took him years to kick it. So I am a little concerned. I had a boyfriend who couldn't function in the morning until he'd had a joint. Just ridiculous, when your life and your day revolve around the bloody stuff.

What that means is they will just lie to you about it if and when they do try it.

I'd rather have a healthy, honest relationship with my children than one where they feel they must lie to me to avoid having me flip out like a maniac.

Their mother's threat was even worse. If you do that again you will sing soprano in the heavenly choir.

Since tobacco, booze, coffee and tea were not consumed in our family made the no drugs ban a natural. There wasn't even a hint of do as I say not as I do in the way we did it. There was a religious factor. I expect they did try it but after they left home.

I smoked a ton, but regret having abused my body and my mind.

Had a lot of fun, but I realize now that all the crap people feed you about it not being addictive, it being "harmless," it being a way of becoming more creative, enlightened, etc., is false and stupid.

I find that people make the mistake of confusing the two words "fun" and "satisfying." Dope is fun, but unsatisfying. Indeed, it leads directly away from satisfaction. It only creates new desires which then beg to be satisfied. Now, one's finite energy needs be divided.

Really, when we need to introduce chemicals into our body in order to make reality interesting, it shows that our minds are dull and obtuse in the first place. The people I find to be cool are not dull and obtuse.

I've seen a lot of people smoke themselves stupid. I've never seen the reverse.

Many people get quite defensive at my opinion on the issue. They assume I must be some kind of Sunday school teacher. But mind you, I've smoked, snorted and ingested more than my share. I've shared in stupidity.

Yet I've thought about the issue honestly and have followed what experience and reason have taught me: dope is a foolish waste of time, money and life.

Take that time and money and be creative. Learn that guitar; write that poem; spend time with friends who can actually hold a sober conversation, or take a quiet walk by yourself. Read a book and experience true, sober genius. These things require a stronger, deeper soul.

To see truly into life, clarity alone is needed. Anything which makes the water muddy is a fool's game.

A few of you get it here and perhaps keep a little silent. For to hold such an opinion as I express is unpopular. Yet, dopers call themselves "individuals." I'm not sure what they mean. They say they are "free spirits." This is even more absurd.

Yes, I agree. The effects of drugs are of course highly subjective and people (like me) who are a bit nuts to begin with can have very bad experiences with pot. I can recall at least 2 very paranoid episodes, typically after having a low tolerance thanks to not toking in ages and ingesting a lot in a short period (bongs, pipes and whatnot). I can't speak on behalf of drugs as a whole, but I've observed that for some, hard drugs are more like alcohol (base, unremarkable pleasures) whereas pot is in the family of drugs that can send a mind into space (like LSD), but because hard drugs can (but overwhelmingly don't) cause overdose and death, we simplistically have the drugs classification system as we do.

Whether cannabis is addictive or not depends which definition of addiction we use. On the 'physically addictive (heroin, alcohol, nicotine)' definition, it's a simple fact that it's not (alcohol withdrawal can kill). Then again, neither is cocaine. Cocaine not addictive? HAHA. Experiments on rats showed that starving rats will bypass food for coke. So, using the definition 'person X will do substance Y habitually, knowing the consequences are inauspicious', cannabis can be considered addictive. Many weedheads smoke religiously (inc upon waking up) and the effects often stop being positive.
