Dear fellow technonerds and computer geeks,
My 3 year old Acer Ferrari 3200 notebook died on my hands few days ago. The autopsy did not shed any light on the cause of premature termination of the laptop in question. My educated guess is that the mobo and/or VGA could not take any more punishment, no matter how lovingly it might have been exacted during the years.
The patient, the afore mentioned deceased, was kind enough to give me an advance notice of the deteriorating technological condition. Therefore I had enough time to console the patient and save everything for the future generations. Rest in peace, Ace.
Now for more cheerful news. As they say in UK: "The King is dead. Long live the King!" I have placed an order for Dell XPS M1330 laptop. I have no idea how long it'll take until it gets here, but I'm waiting for it like I waited for Christmas when I was a kid! I'll get the following configuration:
- 2.0 GHz C2D (Santa Rosa)
- 2 GB RAM
- 120 GB SATA HD
- 13,3" LED display with webcam, red cover
- nVidia 8400m GS, 128MB VRAM
- n-WLAN
- fingerprint scanner
- extra 6-cell battery (comes with 9-cell)
Sure I could've gone for IBM/Lenovo x61, but... I couldn't resist! Oh, and in a year or so I might upgrade the CPU and get a SSD HD (when the prices come down). Aww... "Come to papa!" |

| Nice indeed! You will have to update with the battery life. The santa rosa +led combination should make for great battery life. My macbook pro has a similar spec set and I get fantastic battery life. |

I ordered mine from Dell.co.kr which is more expensive than Dell Japan or Taiwan, but I just couldn't resist. Hey, I feel naked being without a laptop! The very basic model in US is 1299 bucks. My configuration is around 1.7 mil. Hopefully it'll serve me 3 years before it expires as well.
One of the reasons I ordered it is exactly the expected long battery life. I just hope that 2.5" SATA SSD's were bigger and cheaper! By the way, one of the allegedly fastest SSD's are manufactured by Korean company Mtron. Too bad they sell their stuff mainly in Japan and US... and their products come with a hefty price. |

The CPU can be upgraded? Sounds like the new patient (victim?) will be seeing some open heart surgery.
Nice machine though. Congrats. |

Coincidentally, I just ordered a Dell Inspiron 1520 from the states with similar specs:
Intel Core 2 duo T7500 2.2GHz
15.4 Glossy Widescreen (1680x1050)
128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
160G 7200RPM SATA HDD
And LOTS of extra software, Bluetooth, integrated webcam, McAfee/Spyware, Windows Home Office etc, all in Midnight Blue... Set me back $1734 (W1,600,000). Of course, I'll get tagged with VAT so add on $260... Plus shipping... |
