For me - fun on the road is not about being the fastest. It's about being involved.
There's nothing to driving cars. Turn the wheel. Heel-toe. Gas. Brake. I mean, it's fun. With air conditioning.
... but on a bike...
You touch the road. You feel the bike moving under you. You breathe the air outside which is mixed with the smell of your exhaust. Downshift. RPMs quickly fly past 10,000. Engine's screaming. Shift light comes on. Snick. Quick gear change into 6th. Blur. Turn coming up. Brake. Blip. Shift. Off the seat and lean into the corner. countersteer. You're one with the road, one with your bike.
It can be on a slow bike and it'd still be more fun than a faster car.
I mean, when it comes to enjoyment - driving a car is like putting on a big metal condom. Riding a bike is like doing it au natural.
As for you, rocklee... I think you are slightly underestimating bikes.

| Nissan's performance arm NISMO recently bought back 20 slightly used R34 GT-R V-Specs to completely rebuild into the ultimate GT-R: the Z-Tune. For about $170,000 the Z-Tune offers 500 hp, fortified suspension and drivetrain, carbon-fiber bodywork, and disc brakes the diameter of a sumo wrestling ring. Designed as the ultimate street-going vehicle, NISMO claims a Z-Tune will crush through a quarter-mile in just 10.6 seconds on street tires. That would make it the hardest accelerating "production" car ever. |

bike people:
yes, superbikes are awesome. but this is a thread about CARS. not bikes.
plus, the ARIEL ATOM is a CAR which is FASTER than any bike. BOO-YAH! bikes are for fat middle-aged men (Harleys) or young guys who are insecure about their *beep* size (rice burners).

supercars are great because they are EXPENSIVE. and LOUD. and WASTEFUL. and POWERFUL. and SEXY.
if you ride up someplace in a Ferarri 250 GTO or a Honda CBR600, which will get you the most props?
that's a rhetorical question. i know i will never own a Ferarri GTO and that i could go out and buy a 200 mph Honda motorcycle tomorrow. that isn't the point.
oh, also, cars are more awesome than bikes. in case you don't think the Ariel Atom video is enough evidence, consider these:

show me a motorcycle breaking the sound barrier. really, please do. i'd love to see it. |

you make an excellent point. but again, the topic isn't "are bikes more fun to ride than cars?" no shit, sherlock, of course even a slow weak bike can be more fun than a fast, powerful car. hence the thread title: SUPERCARS. |

... because on Dave's ESL cafe, posts NEVER deviate from the original topic!
I'll play.
The reason that the Ariel is faster (why did top gear line it up against a 600RR and not a 1000RR?) than bikes is the same reason that Formula1 Cars are faster than MotoGP bikes. Cars have FAR more traction. They have four relatively large contact patches - bikes? - two which are smaller than the palm of your hand. On a tight windy course, a supercar will destroy a bike.
The funniest thing I think I've ever seen on top gear is this episode. It's a riot!
Part 1: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Zg5Swb7Es1Q
Part 2: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Xk69Nbqkcsk
Supercars are insane. A little too much. I think the perfect car for the urban jungle and the track is the Porsche 911 turbo. It's classy. It's understated. It's fast as *beep*. It's not too wide (good for tight country roads). Good ground clearance (can fit in parking garages). Perfect. |
