Yes, it is official!

I have accepted a position with the Her Majesty's British Embassy on a six-month contract to teach English to North Korean red-tape workers "American English".

I didn't know this, but Britain has an Embassy in North Korea whereas America does not. There is a massive demand for "American-sounding" teachers in North Korea, with all the diplomacy going on.

Needless to say, I will be leaving my position in two-months time, travelling to Harben, China, and flying (I was hoping by train) to Pyeongyang.

I have a great deal of preparing to do to say the least!

Some of you may know that I am a Canadian with a British passport. That's what sealed the deal for the most part. My experience teaching in South Korea, my Korean language ability, and the fact I have an "American" accent.

Excited? Words cannot begin to desribe how I feel!

My family just got a long e-mail from me, so I will let you all know how they feel about it, etc.

I am assuming that once I get their, I will be off Dave's for the whole 6 months, also if I can phone to my friend I'll get him to post something here worthwhile.

If anyone at all knows anyone in the Pyeongyang area (Shinae district), PM me.

More coming soon!

Excited GWoW

Are you taking your recently reconciled GF with you? Wink

A gutsy move going to do what you're doing. Best of luck.

Do the North Koreans and the world a favor and assassinate Kim Jeong-hitler.

Cheers,

Definitely good luck!

Hopefully you'll have internet access there.

I hope the lifestyle doesn't bring you down. Things to look out for:
Loudspeakers
Women
Living Conditions
Food
Toilets & Plumbing
Lonliness

Other than that you'll have a great time.

Umm err... Only a matter of time before you're forced into the miltary...

Curious though.. are you going to go in with a "I hate America" attitude just so you can be the cool guy?

Crap, that's scary. If the Shrub Brigades start another war to prop up Gilligan's flagging poll numbers, you're gonna be kinda stuck, aren't you?

Still, congrats, and good luck - maybe you can get some kinda consular post out of it in the future or something...

Take lots of books! Shocked

No. She is going to Australia for year and I will join her after I finish in Chosun (North Korea).

No. I am not allowed to talk to any average "Joe Shmo" without permission. Even if I was allowed to talk to someone, I would not talk politics.

That's one reason I took it. The other is that it pays surprisingly well.

I have been told that some books are not allowed and will be reviewed before being letted into the country. I will also be quizzed at length by agents from both governments before being granted a visa and awarded a contract.
