Hall of Fame coach Bill Walsh, who won three Super Bowls with the 49ers, dead at 75

By JANIE MCCAULEY, AP Sports Writer
July 30, 2007

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Bill Walsh, the groundbreaking football coach who won three Super Bowls and perfected the ingenious schemes that became known as the West Coast offense during a Hall of Fame career with the San Francisco 49ers, has died. He was 75.

Walsh died early Monday following a long battle with leukemia, according to Stanford University, where he served as coach and athletic director.

Sad.................great coach.

Whack. How many NFL teams run a variation of the West Coast offense? The guy revolutionized the game.

Best Personal guy in the history of the NFL. His 49er teams were built w/o high draft picks.

Joe Montana 3rd round

Charles Haley 5th round

Jerry Rice was a first round pick but he lasted until the 15th pick.

Michael Carter 6th round

Rodger Craig 2nd round.

Steve Wallace. Dwight Clark, John Taylor . ect, ect.

Any team in the NFL could have had these players but only Walsh was smart enough to find them.

The 49er built and rebuilt their team 3 times.

Other teams like the Giants had the benefit of a least one super high pick LT was the second pick in the draft.

The great Steeler and Cowboy teams of the 70's were also built moslty with high picks. And after their superbowl years their drafting became terrible. The great Bear team of 1985 was also built with high picks except for Richard Dent.

Jiimmy Johnson would come in second but he wasn't as good when he didn't have a team that inherited Michael Irvin, Herschel Walker and the first pick in the draft.

I loved watching the Niners back in the day. Montana/Rice, what a combo.

Growing up playing football with my brothers we had a play called M-T-R which stood for Montana to Rice, a deep post route. Walsh was a true legend of the game and his impact will continue for as long as there is American football. On a side note, Go Dolphins! One more month!

Ah, the poor Dolphins. Now, that is a franchise that needs to be reborn. I am not a big fan of them, but it would be nice to see them back in the glory
