Man, I'm aching like a rabid goat to leave this place and relocate to the real Asia, aka China.
Thing is, I can't decide on a good city. Chengdu looks interesting, as does Dalian, although I suspect Dalian may be better for visiting than living due to the crappy weather. Ideally I would love to stay in Ruili but seeing as I have never been a pimp, dealed, or owned a casino work options there are non-existent for little old me.
Longshot I know, but if anyone has worked in China for a significant amount of time and can recommend some good cities to work and live in it would be much appreciated. Not interested in Guangzhou due to Cantonese being spoken over Mandarin, and all the natural disasters that seem to hit that place.
Cheers |

Hopely I do, too.
And for the record, my feeling of the Korea is not negative, the feeling of Korea is negative to the me. |

I lived in Baoding for one year. That's about an hour south of Beijing. What sort of place are you looking for? Active? Quiet?
Maybe you've had some crappy hagwon jobs, but I'd be surprised if you have a better experience in China. I think a lot of this Asian living is a state of mind. |

I am looking for a city of no less than 5 million people.
Also, how long have you been in Korea? I have good reasons for wanting to move to China for a while, so don't worry about me. |

OP, I hear ya.... My fiance went back to a big city in China to see old friends and distant family and I KNOW she is dreading having to come back to Korea again, Thursday... Part of it must be that she can speak mandarin, but also... the people... yeah right, authentic asia, maybe... they dont seem to have the rod in their hineys like people around these parts; at least as friends and whatnot goes..
I'd try chongching (sp?) its supposed to be up and coming and of course thats where hot pot came from. Shanghai is the most exciting but it tires you out with all the action after a while. I'd love to go to HK, but the job market aint all that... |

Why wouldn't China be a better experience??
I've worked in China before, AND I agree with the OP; China, for me, was fantastic and I will be going back to work there again before I leave Asia.
I lived in Yanji, a small city. It's part of the Korean Autonomous Zone by the DPRK, and Russia.
Just do your math and homework, and be picky about a job and you won't get messed with: it's as easy as that. |

I'd love to check out Chongqing.
I went to Sichuan provence...and really liked it. Chengdu, etc. However, Chendgu seemed a bit small to me. Chongqing is suppose to be a massive built-up city and an ugly one at that. But something is appealing about that. |

I plan on living in China someday. In almost everyway it's better than Korea, but it's one drawback is VERY bad. It's too polluted. If you think Seoul is polluted well you haven't seen anything yet.

Dalian has great weather for the most part. One of the only places in China that is not a furnace in the summer, and it is probably the cleanest city in China. The women in Dalian are very attractive too!
Winter is slightly colder than Seoul, but there is not much snow.
I really believe there are only 3 cities I could return to in China - Dalian and Xiamen (weather/environment) and Shanghai (despite the atrocious weather/environment).
Not sure what you are expecting in China, but Korea (Seoul) is a much easier place to live, although the weather in Dalian is much better. |

I would recommend: Shanghai, Xiamen (small, developed city across from Taiwan, beautiful beaches and a university town), Hangzhou (a giant garden with pagodas around a lake), Beijing (it has its advantages and disadvantages, one being that it is terribly polluted, but it is the capital), and Zhuhai, it's in Guangdong but since it is a SEZ it has been populated by lots of Mandarin-speaking northerners. It also has the most beautiful surroundings and it borders on Macau.
I would recommend travelling around China a bit first if you haven't already, to see if you like it better than Korea.
Good luck in China. |

I had been to China 4 times and been to five cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Weihai, Qingdao and Fuzhou) China has alot of good points, but I would rather work and live in Korea for the following reasons;
1. The exchange rate makes the salary more attractive in Korea (in $US, compare the $2100 to $2300 you would make in Korea with the mere $650 to $1300 you would make in China [and keep in mind that $1300= 10,000rmb that you could earn in one of the high-end jobs])
2. The food in Korea is less greasy and because of the food preservative controversy now happening in China, is more safe. (though I have to admit there are more varieties of food in China)
3. Korean cities are more developed with less slums than you would encounter in China (places like Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou)
4. Learning Hangeul is far easier than Mandarin, especially when learning to read and write (it can take years for a foreigner to learn to write and read chinese)
The one thing that I think China has over Korea; people tend to be more friendly and the women more accepting to be in a relationship with a foreigner than Korean women and there is less negative media coverage in Chinese media than what people are subjected to in Korea, part of that reason is because Korea is far smaller and has less exposure to foreigners (only after 1992 and the opening of the English-teaching market in 1995) |
