Anyway, I still have to come down prefering Catholicism on the whole issue. Disclosure: I was raised Catholic. But evangelicals believe some ridiculous stuff. My favorite kind of Christians are old school Protestants, you know, the old Anglo-Saxon breed, Anglican or Episcopalian, who have a very reasoned and moderate faith. Alternately, the ethnic Catholics are a fun breed. You know, the Italians or Hispanics or Irish.
We'll see with Ratzinger. If the Church as a whole disagrees with his policies, you'll see a radically more liberal Pope replace him. My sense is that no matter what, the Church won't install a successor quite like Benedict. The man is very conservative but also very, very intellectual. |
Though I'm not religious in any traditional sense, I'm rather a big fan of some Catholic references in the fictional entertainment area. In particular, I have all 3 seasons of the brilliant Brother Cadfael mysteries starring Sir Derek Jacobi (a twelth? century monk who solves crimes sort of like the Name of the Rose, I guess) and Ballykissangel (a comtemporary comedy/drama set in a fictional rural Irish village) where a lot of good comedy takes place in the confessional.
There are some who might be termed fundamentalists (though I don't think they're very fond of words with so many syllables as their roots are in poverty and limited educational opportunities ;->) whose music I like a lot because I am a fan of American roots music -- bluegrass, blues, old traditional country music (not the modern schlock), and bluegrass gospel is a part of that.
It does present some problems however for musicians. I know a band back in the US (friends of friends, actually) called the Nashville Bluegrass Band who enjoy performing Bluegrass Gospel, but the problem for them was in many venues in the South where they performed it, some audience members would come up afterwards to ask them when (not if) they were "born again."
So, I don't know if they're still performing it live or not. Perhaps only at more carefully selected venues.
Cheers. |

Pope Benedict declares that Creationism vs. Evolution is an absurdity
| Quote: |
Pope Benedict XVI said the debate raging in some countries particularly the United States and his native Germany between creationism and evolution was an absurdity, saying that evolution can coexist with faith.
The pontiff, speaking as he was concluding his holiday in northern Italy, also said that while there is much scientific proof to support evolution, the theory could not exclude a role by God.
They are presented as alternatives that exclude each other, the pope said. This clash is an absurdity because on one hand there is much scientific proof in favor of evolution, which appears as a reality that we must see and which enriches our understanding of life and being as such.
The pope, leader of some 1.1 billion Roman Catholics worldwide, said: We must respect the interior laws of creation, of this Earth, to learn these laws and obey them if we want to survive.
This obedience to the voice of the Earth is more important for our future happiness ... than the desires of the moment. Our Earth is talking to us and we must listen to it and decipher its message if we want to survive, he said.
Last April, the Vatican sponsored a scientific conference on climate change to underscore the role that religious leaders around the world could play in reminding people that willfully damaging the environment is sinful. |
Pope Benedict has also called upon the faithful to protect the Earth. That astounds even me. |

So the Pope is restating what the Catholics have taught since the beginning. Big whoop.
Quote:
Indeed. Every god believer is 99.99% atheist. He does not believe in the thousands of gods and hundreds of religions out there, save for one. Tomato put it best. It's like a teacher that writes 200 possible assignments on the blackboard, tells you one is the correct assignment for tomorrow, if you don't do the correct assignment you will be punished, now guess. We'd not call that a fair teacher. We shouldn't call that a fair god either.
I was taught in Catholic school that the Catholic church believed there was truth and salvation in all the world's religions. I guess I was lied to by a nun.
Well... not all god believers think they have the exclusive Truth. I would bet you most people of faith don't think they have exclusive Truth. When I do find such people it becomes comical; that includes Atheists as well. |
