If in the future if I need to resign my job with a Hagwon, will I find it difficult to get a letter of release and are horror stories about not getting a letter of release over exaggerated?

A lot of Koreans who hire FTs for private enterprises just hate giving a LOR. They see it is a terrible precedent for their institution and a big loss of face. Be prepared to get nasty if you really want one.

Yeah, I'd say so! One hagwon won't provide one simply to get money(50% or more) from the next hagwon for the airplane ticket(s).

They aren't only bad for us, they place Koreans against Koreans with us in the middle. Can you think of a better position to be in?

You should be prepared for the $hit$torm that will come when you actually ask for one. And also be prepared to PAY, in a big way sometimes both monetarily and mentally, for that little piece of paper declaring your freedom.

Could be the worst month of your life; leaving a contract early. JUST BE PREPARED FOR THE WORST!!!!

Or another one. If you don't have a re-entry visa, take a trip somewhere. Your visa automatically cancels when you leave the country without a re-entry visa.

If you work for a good school and you resign according to the contract terms, then you should have no trouble getting a letter of release on your last day of work. You can let them know that you need and expect a letter and can get it in writing that they will give you one. Some schools even have a contract clause guaranteeing a letter of release if you resign according to the contract. Of course, you probably wouldn't leave such a school early anyway.


If you work for one of the horrible schools, and have no contract guarantees, and you have real issues and reasons for leaving, then you will probably already be on bad terms with the owner and/or managers and you may find it difficult to get a letter of release. Schools are not required to give you one, and revenge is a common emotional response by owners and managers in Korea.


Don't plan to quit. Don't plan to fight over bad contract terms. Find a good school before you come to Korea.

Try the civilized route at first, but be prepared to get down and dirty if needs be.
