I will be begining work in (well actually near) Jinju at the end of August. Was wondering if anyone had any experiences of working or living in the city, anyone still there, what is the life like for FTs any regular hang-outs?

I am hoping to meet up/IM with anyone living in the city as I will be the only FT at the school. How does the city/area compare with the rest of Korea? what are the attractions?

I'm not in Jinju, but I'm pretty near by, so feel free to hit me up with a PM when you get here. I don't have a whole lot to say about Jinju, I go there every so often because the shopping's better than in my town. Doesn't seem to have a huge expat population, but I know there is a small one. There's an Italian place called Zio Ricco (spelling?) that apparently has a reasonable foreign presence and they do a book exchange also. You could probably ask around and figure out where it is.

I'm 45 minutes from there and from many conversations with 8-10 of the 100 or so expat teachers there I've heard that there are a few dozen twentysomething heavy drinking bar fighting types who have gotten EVERY waygook banned from some bars for their repeated late night scuffles. I also know a few Christian waygook teachers there if that's more your speed. The good thing is the fellow waygooks are approachable, only twice have I been rebuffed out of a dozen-plus greetings. Friendly folk for the most part compared to bigger city types.

Jinju is a great city to spend a night at while passing through.
It's also a university town in the sense that London, Ontario, Canada is.
Think of it as a big sleepy town. One of its greatest benefits is its location for those who like to travel, as it's close to the mountains of Jiri National park, the islands of Geoje and Namhae, the cities of Changwon, Masan, Tongyeong and buses and trains to Busan, Daegu, Gyeongju.

It is also a city with a nice long riverside park to jog, rollerblade or cycle through. I've gone to Jinju just to do that a few times.

Anyone in or around Jinju (or arriving there soonish) PM me and we can chat a bit more about the place - i've heard the transport links are pretty good so hopefully I will get to see some of the area while i'm over there

VI, made any visits to Sangaesa or the Green tea Cultural Exhibition. Buryil Pokpo is worth the hike to visit. Hadong is pretty cool place, good English speaking doctor there too, just near the new bus terminal. Jinju okay as well. The Lantern festival and the Bullfighting festival, plus the old fortress. Smile

Bullfighting festival?? How come I didn't know about that? Whenwhenwhen do they hold that festival??
Hooked on bullfighting festivals ever since I went to that Cheongdo bullfighting fair back in March. Do they have a mechanical bull in Jinju too? Extra points in that case.

I wouldn't move to Jinju. Too small townish and isolated.
