I am completing a teachers training workshop. I want to show one or twon episodes of Friends so the class can have a discussion reinforcing lessons on describing peoples appearance, describing peoples character, mood, etc..
I am not a fan of the show but it seems like it would be a good light show to use. It is also popular so it is fast and easy to download.
What specific "Friends" episode would you recommend?
Thanks

Why not do a show that's still on TV and popular. Friends is old, boring, and over rated.
Shows that are popular with students now include Greys anatomy (haven't seen this), Prison Break, and House. These are probably a better choice. |

Prison Break...if only because there is more variety among the cast...young, old, Black, White, Latin, etc. etc.
Other options might be Battlestar Galactica, Lost, Desperate Housewives, even sigh CSI (that show is on ALL THE TIME!), even Oprah since she has different guests on and they show members of the audience...or one of those popular shows that are shown 60 million times a day. |

I think any of the flashback episodes would be great. Not only can you discuss their appearance, personalities etc., but also contrast that with how they are in the present. |

SHow the episode where Joey gets a job in a porno film, and hey keeps saying THERE I AM, THERE I AM, THERE I AM, THERE I AM. Or what about the show where Ross finds out his wife is a lesbo, or the time Rachel tries to kill herself because brad pitt dumped her for Angelina. Wait, that was not on friends, that was real life, sorry! |

I would choose The Office (US). Easy to understand, not too much material at one time, and probably Koreans would relate to some of it. |

Unless your students are very high level, I wouldn't use Prison Break, the language is difficult. I have some Friends cloze exercises, PM me if you want them. |

Season 2, "the one with two parties" is quite funny. And you're kids can see how social gatherings work in the West. Lots of "dressing up" as well to talk about.
I think choosing "Friends" is a good idea because you can pretty much pick any random episode and show it. With a lot of the other shows, there are two many ongoing stories that might confuse the students. |

You have the opportunity to show them something other than the standard American sitcom junk - why not give them something they can think about... do you really want a classroom full of kids talking about how Joey and Rachel look?
If it's a workshop about appearances, why not take the opportunity to show them shows that have people who are not twenty something, caucasian and airheaded? I once showed my kids this short play on Youtube that had black, white and Asian performers. They laughed at the guy with the afro for about 30 seconds, but when they heard how well-spoken he was they quietened down... |
