i was thinking that perhaps the people of dave's would be willing to participate in this... maybe even make it a sticky.
i'm thinking that we could list our locations and sample costs for newcomers (or people looking for a better deal, i suppose).
an example would be:
Location: ULJIN
Store: ___________, Jukbyeon Ri
quart/whatever of milk: ______ KRW
liter of water: _____ KRW (x brand)
block of cheese: (unavailable)
box of cereal: ______ KRW (x brand, y size)
instant noodle: ______ KRW (brand)
beer: ______ KRW (x brand, y size)
or whatever else you use on a regular basis.
what do you think? |

Not a bad idea.
However, it occurs to me that many posters on Dave's, for a variety of reasons, would be reticent to reveal their exact whereabouts.
Therefore, a more vague means of geographic designation might prove more popular.
For example, I found on a recent foray to the local super that 3.6 liters of 30 percent soju varied between 9280 won and 9990 won. This was in a semi-rural area of southwestern K.
I did not buy either bottle. I did buy a 1.8 liter bottle of 30 percent (60 proof) Bohae Soju on my trip to the big city at a cost 4,180 won. They also had a 1.8 liter bottle of 70 proof soju for about 5,000 won, which I did not get. My previous purchase had been a bottle of 20 percent Maple soju, but I forget the price, as I bought it about four months ago.
Another problem with your cost of living project may be that some people have trouble deciphering the label, given that it is often solely in Korean, and are not quite sure what it is that they have purchased. So using UPC codes may be easier.
For example, I recently bought:
4013921001083 for 1600 won
8809022208270 for 4580 won
8809087681339 for 10700 won
8801045200521 for 980 won.
I hope this helps. |
