Man appears on bestiality and child sex charges
NZPA | Thursday, 19 July 2007

A Napier man has appeared in court charged with sex offences involving children of both genders, as well as a dog, a cow, a pig and a horse.

The man entered no pleas in Napier District Court yesterday to 17 charges, alleging offences as long ago as 1954, when he was a young teenager, and continuing until as recently as 1990.

The charges allege rape and other indecencies with young girls, buggery with a cow, bestiality with a pig, an indecent act with a mare, and an indecent assault on a boy.

The offences are alleged to have happened in Napier.

The historic nature of the charges is highlighted by one alleging the man attempted to "carnally know" a girl under the age of 12 in the mid-1950s.

The former offence of carnal knowledge is now known as unlawful sexual intercourse or rape, depending on a complainant's age. The man was granted interim name suppression of name and remanded on bail to appear in the court again on August 15.

A police investigation sparked by complaints at the end of 2005 saw inquiries extended overseas before the man was arrested and charged earlier this month.

This really sickened me...

Remains of 4 pre-term infants found
By RANDALL CHASE, Associated Press Writer

OCEAN CITY, Md. - Police with cadaver-sniffing dogs, shovels and a backhoe dug Monday outside the home of a woman charged with killing her baby boy, widening a grim search that has turned up four tiny sets of remains.

None of the remains appeared to be those of full-term babies, police said, including those of the most newly delivered infant, a boy, who was found in a vanity below the bathroom sink in Christy Freeman's home.

Two trash bags containing separate sets of human bones were found in a trunk in her bedroom, and another set of remains was found in a bag in a small recreational vehicle parked in her driveway. All four were believed to be from fetuses Freeman carried, police said.

Police kept searching in the scrubby, overgrown yard outside Freeman's house after the cadaver dogs hit on new possible scents.

"I want to clear my name in this case," Freeman, 37, told a judge at a bond hearing Monday when she was ordered held without bail on first-degree murder and other charges in the most recent death. "If you offer me a bond, I'm not going to leave. ... I'm going to be here. I'm going to help clear this situation up."

Soon after the hearing, police said the chief medical examiner's preliminary report found that the baby boy was stillborn, but the cause of death was still under investigation. Police spokesman Barry Neeb said it was possible the charges against Freeman could be amended as a result.

Freeman, who has four other children, came to authorities' attention Thursday, when emergency medical technicians and police were called to her apartment on the second floor of a small, rundown white house behind a 7-Eleven that faces the Coastal Highway, the main north-south route in this resort town.

Her boyfriend, Raymond W. Godman Jr., said that Freeman had passed out in the bathroom and that he carried her to the sofa, according to the charging documents. She was lying down and bleeding heavily, and had a garbage bag and towels under her.

She initially denied having been pregnant even after she was taken to a hospital Thursday and doctors discovered a placenta and part of an umbilical cord, police said. She eventually told police she had delivered a dead and deformed baby claiming that she did not see any hands or feet and that she had flushed the body down the toilet, according to charging documents.

Police got a search warrant and found the infant wrapped in a white towel with a blue stripe in the cabinet below the bathroom sink, according to the charging documents, in which authorities describe the baby as a "viable fetus/infant," with hands, feet and facial features.

Police then found the two sets of remains and a placenta in the bedroom trunk Thursday, and a plastic bag with the fourth infant's corpse Friday in the motor home.

The boy she was charged with killing was stillborn, and looked to be in the 26th week of pregnancy, police said, citing the medical examiner's preliminary report.

The chief medical examiner in Baltimore was examining the remains and trying to determine the causes of deaths, ages and if they were related to Freeman.

Prosecutor Joel Todd said Freeman was charged with murder under a 2005 state law authorizing murder convictions for fetuses killed after 20 weeks. The statute, however, does not specify how old the fetus must be; it says only that prosecutions are allowed for the deaths of viable fetuses, a standard the state medical examiner has said is generally around seven months.

Todd did not immediately return a call Monday evening seeking clarification.

Earlier, Todd said investigators are still probing whether Freeman caused the babies' deaths.

"We will have to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that she did something to cause that baby to be stillborn," he said.

Police Chief Bernadette DiPino declined to discuss any evidence about how the baby could have been born dead, such as whether Freeman induced an abortion.

Freeman and Godman, who owned a cab company called Classic Taxi, lived with her other children at the home, where paint was peeling from the exterior and an air conditioning unit was rusting. Fishing poles were stored on an upstairs balcony.

Bulldozers cleared mounds of dirt from the backyard, while police taped off her block and erected a temporary wall to shield the investigation. By dusk Monday, no additional human remains had been found.

Police said the other children were safe and were in the custody of Godman, believed to be the father of those four and the four whose remains were found, DiPino said. He was still being interviewed but has not been charged, investigators said.

Classic Taxi specializes in using cars from the 1950s and 1960s, according to the company's Web site. On the Web site, Freeman's profile said that she and Godman had been a couple since 1988 and that her hobbies were "our four children." She said the family were NASCAR fans and liked to fish, boat and camp together.

A man who answered the phone at Classic Taxi declined to comment.

Ron Cecil, 71, owner of Aaron Taxi, said he had met Freeman through the local taxi association and said he saw her driving a cab several weeks ago. The charging documents described Freeman as 5 feet, 8 inches tall, and weighing 180 pounds, and Cecil said she often wore sweat shirts.

"She could have easily been pregnant and it not have been known," he said.

Neighbor Jodi Kerlin, 31, said she saw Freeman about a month ago as Freeman took out her trash and it appeared then that Freeman might have been pregnant. "The thought passed through my head," said Kerlin, who recently gave birth. "I passed it off."

NZ backpacker jailed for attack in Scotland
New 11:19AM Wednesday August 01, 2007

New Zealand backpacker Levi Virbickas has been jailed for four years in Scotland, after a street attack that ruined a British soldier's military career.

Virbickas, 21, from Whangamata, punched Royal Irish Regiment ranger Paul Bacon in the face 15 to 20 times and jumped on his head in the attack, the BBC reported.

The incident happened at Falcon Square in Inverness, Scotland, last November after Mr Bacon had returned from Afghanistan. It was captured on CCTV.

At the High Court in Edinburgh on Friday, Judge Lady Dorrian said the assault had "appalling consequences".

Virbickas would have faced a six-year sentence had it not been for his guilty plea, she said.

Mr Bacon, set to be medically discharged from the army, had planned to remain in the forces before pursuing a career in the police or as a paramedic.

He told police he now had no future to look forward to and would be dependent on an army pension.

He was punched in the face as he lay on the ground before the Virbickas took a run and jumped on his head, the court was told.

Virbickas checked on his condition before stamping his face up to 10 times, then kicking him while he was unconscious.

He admitted assaulting Mr Bacon to his severe injury, permanent impairment and to the danger of his life.

Mr Bacon was in hospital for nearly seven weeks.

The defence solicitor said Virbickas, a first offender, had no recollection of the incident.

He told police he had shared a bottle of whisky with three others a backpackers' hostel before going to a nightclub, where he drank cocktails and beer

And one from Mexico to chill the bones...

Mexican woman kept dead husband for a year

MEXICO CITY - A woman in Mexico City kept the body of her dead husband by her bedside for a year until neighbours, disturbed by the smell, called the police.

Police broke down Mercedes Velarde's door yesterday and found the putrefied body of her husband Edmundo on the floor of her bedroom.

Authorities said on Wednesday they were investigating Velarde's claim her husband died of natural causes. They believe the man, in his early 60s, had mental problems that may have been linked to his death.

Local media reported that Velarde's son regularly helped remove worms infesting his father's body.

Police could not confirm the reports but said her two adult children knew their mother was keeping the body.

The family is being examined by a psychiatrist. After an autopsy, the family could face criminal charges or be sent to a psychiatric hospital.

Authorities said hiding a dead person, even a family member, is a crime.

"Yes, these people have psychological problems, (but) they hid a corpse. Even if it is a family member, they committed a crime," Veronica Sanchez at the Mexico City attorney general's office told Reuters.

Police: Mom bathed, dressed dead kids By BRUCE SMITH, Associated Press Writer
Wed Aug 1, 11:18 PM ET

HANAHAN, S.C. - Two children found dead under an apartment sink were bathed and dressed by their mother before being wrapped in trash bags, according to arrest warrants released Wednesday.

The warrants provide new details of the events that police say led to the arrest of a troubled single mother suspected of leaving her children in a hot car for hours while she was at work.

Sametta Heyward, 27, was charged Tuesday with homicide by child abuse after the bodies of 1-year-old Triniti Campbell and 4-year-old Shawn Campbell Jr. were found in her apartment.

The warrants said Heyward called her ex-boyfriend and told him she had "killed her babies."

Authorities have not determined exactly how the children died. Heyward had left them in a car on Sunday as temperatures outside reached 88 degrees, the warrants said.

Heyward was being held at a Berkeley County jail. Her attorney said he didn't know when he would ask for a bail hearing.

'Crazed animals' in Christchurch racist attack

Three attackers acted like "crazed animals", bashing a Chinese student with beer bottles and yelling racial taunts during a home invasion in Christchurch early yesterday.

Police are investigating the attack on the 22-year-old Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology student after three white men with shaven heads and wearing masks forced their way into his Mandeville Street, Riccarton, flat at 5am.

The frightened victim, who wanted to be known as Leilolala, said that as a Buddhist, he felt the attack was his "bad luck".

"I think maybe I did something wrong. Maybe I killed an animal," he said.

He and his girlfriend moved into the flat on Saturday and had already been broken into twice before yesterday's assault.

He was in bed upstairs with his girlfriend when they heard a knock at the front door.

When he opened the door slightly, "they pushed it in really fast".

They pushed him into the lounge and started to punch him.

"They swore a lot. There was lots I couldn't understand. They said, 'F... off, you yellow Asian boy, this is white people's place' – lots of stuff like this," he said.

The men were acting "crazy" as they bashed him with beer bottles.

"They were crazy, like animals. I thought they were on drugs," he said.

"I practised kung-fu for four or five years. I was thinking, 'I can't control the situation'. I was trying to fight back, but they didn't feel any pain."

He suffered facial injuries but was able to fend off some of the blows and injured one of his attacker's arms before they fled after about 10 minutes.

"I think the other guys saw (their friend) could not move his arm, so they left," he said.

Leilolala, who is studying cooking, said he had lived in New Zealand for nearly five years and had not experienced a racist attack before.

"They hate me maybe because they think we are rich because we drive nice cars. But it's not because we are rich but because we think cars are quite cheap here. Maybe they think it's unfair for them," he said.

He said he still wanted to live in New Zealand despite the attack.

"My girlfriend is quite scared, but for me I am OK because I think these kind of people are very little in New Zealand."

Detective Sergeant Scott Anderson, of the Hornby police, said the attack appeared racially motivated as "race hate" comments were made during the attack and the attackers left without taking any property.

They were described as being aged between 17 and 23.

The director of the Peeto Multicultural Learning Centre, Patrick O'Connor, said the attack was "absolutely shocking" and the community needed to challenge and confront such behaviour.

"All decent people have got to be cohesive in resisting the ugliness of racism, especially the arbitrary and anonymous face of racism where cowardly thugs disguise themselves and outnumber innocent people," he said.

The Chinese community contributed a lot to Christchurch's economy and diversity, he said.

The Chinese contributed $500 million to the international student market in 2003-04 – an industry that would be affected by race-hate crimes, he said.

"Thugs have an effect of ruining our export education industry because incidents like this get reported in Chinese newspapers and suddenly this little island gets the undeserved reputation of racist thugs and we are not at all," he said.

Christchurch Chinese Students and Scholars' Association president Jerry Dai said he was disgusted at the attack.

"I am worried not only for Chinese students, but for all international students in Christchurch," he said.

"I will inform our members and other Chinese students to be aware of their safety. As a collective, we will not tolerate these kind of disgusting attacks."

Wasn't the incident of the guy (James ????? 20ish) caught romancing a dead deer he had found on the side of the road in Wisconsin? It wasn't a first offence.

In other news, a 50ish man was arrested recently in Alabama in the predawn hours in a neighbor's barn and detained on charges of wooing some moo. Several moo, with a history of such activity.

Man jailed for injecting girl with infected blood
12:07PM Friday August 03, 2007

A man who infected a 14-year-old girl with Hepatitis C by injecting her with a syringe was today jailed.

Sean Leslie Riley had been employed to do renovations at the girl's home in December, 2005.

The Crown alleged he had given the girl a drink which made her feel dizzy before injecting himself, then the girl, telling her it was Ritalin.

The victim said she was injected several more times in her hand after being taken to a shed on another property in Hastings.

Riley, 28, of Hastings, appeared for sentence today in the High Court at Napier after being convicted in June of injuring the teenager, with reckless disregard for her safety, by infecting her with Hepatitis C.

He was sentenced to two years and nine months in jail.

A jury found him not guilty on two charges of sexual violation and one of threatening to kill.

His counsel, Eric Forster, told Justice Denis Clifford that his client had no relative history of criminality although earlier this year he was convicted of discharging an air pistol in a park.

His client continued to be seriously ill with Hepatitis C and Crohne's Disease while on remand in prison and had also been the target of a physical attack.

Justice Clifford said the victim's age and both the physical and emotional impact of contracting Hepatitis C were aggravating factors.

A victim impact report revealed the girl had experienced significant ongoing effects including weight loss, hair loss and depression.

While a specialist's report indicated the victim had finished her treatment and now had normal liver functions, there was still a 20 per cent chance she would not be cured of the disease.
