I've attached a link from MSNBC asking people to vote on the greatest host of all time. My vote goes with Johnny Carson. He was the master. He always asked great questions and he always did all the listening and let his guests do most of the talking. Also, his comedic timing was brilliant. Sorry, I wasn't able to include more options in the poll. Obviously. Letterman should be there.
Here's the link:

Letterman. His wit is real and can be deployed without a script. |

Leno? I didn't realise having a giant inbred chin and making jokes in support of the president were talents.
Also, on the list through the link I'd have to say Stephen Colbert, although he hasn't been around long enough, and I'm too young to remember Carson. |

Sadly, I am old enough to vividly remember Carson. He was awesome. I would put Letterman a close second, though. He should have got the job when Johnny retired. Johnny actually wanted Letterman to take over but the studio execs overruled him because they wanted Leno. It didn't take Letterman long to bolt to another network. |

Letterman has never made me laugh. Leno is a snooze. Colbert rocks my world, Conan makes me giggle for reasons I cannot explain, and but the real King of Late Night is .... this guy. Hard hitting, unrelenting, getting to the bottom of the real issues. |

Arsenio Hall was pretty awesome. It was sad to see him hosting that new version of Star Search but hey...everyone has bills to pay, I'm sure... |

Donahue? Intelligent guy but ZERO personality. I was amazed he stayed on for as many years as he did. |

That's the point, he wasn't an overbearing personality. A talk show is not supposed to be about the host talking! conversations are supposed to be multilateral and audience involved. Nowadays it's a guest pimping a book or hyping some cause and a host doing a song and dance.
Donahue facilitated a daytime talk show between multiple guests and an involved audience. He was like a symphony conductor, and I grew up loving his talk show.
Carson did the same for late night talk shows, making the show be about the guests and the audience.
That kind of rapport is sadly missing these days. |

I'm disgusted than nobody recognizes the awesome contributions of Chevy Chase, Pat Sajak, or Maury Povitch.
