have just reserved seats on the beetle for first week of september. can someone advise as to how i go about getting one of the rail passes for cheap travel while i'm there. do i need to go through an agent?

It's called a JR pass, and you have to apply for it from outside Japan. You can do so online, but you'll probably have to fax something as well.

I don't remember all the details, but it's a good deal and available only to foreigners.

If your JR pass isn't enough (runs out) then you can usually pick up pretty cheap tickets at discount ticket shops. They sell a variety of items at a discount, sometimes substantial but usually just below face value. Still a decent way to save a buck, or a yen... Also, check out both the overnight bus and trains. The overnight trains are usually called blue trains. Also, there is a travel pass called Seisyun 18 kippu that allows you to use local and express trains on an unlimited basis anywhere in Japan for a period of 5 days (can be consecutive or not). The price is Y11500 but sometimes with promotions it can be gotten for Y8000. Anyway, this means, if you have time but lack money, you can go from one end of Japan to the other in about 24 hours and only pay a little. Here's the English link:

There's some kind of deal with tthe JR pass and the ferry too. Check that out. Sorry I don't haev any info, but you know i'm trying to help.

yes, someone else mentioned that, but i've already booked the ferry. i did look into it, and i don't think theres much in it. thanks for the advice though Cool
