Got caught driving without a korean DL/international DL. I showed them my DL from the states and told me that I should of exchanged it for a international license. So they took me to the police station and they proceeded to go through paper work. Does anyone know what the consequences are? |

As far as I know, there's not really any excuse for not changing your licence. I exchanged my British licence for a Korean one the other week, and it was painless. |

Serves you right. Would you drive without a legal licence back home?
It's pretty easy to get your licence changed over. Maybe if you get a Korean/International licence would make the problem go away. |

*beep*, that's expensive. I thought it would be around 100,000.
If you have an Intl. license, you are still supposed to get a Korean one if you are a resident. |

Let me see if I unferstand this. You were caught driving illegally in Korea without a valid DL and you are upset by the possible fine. If you are not a tourist but live and/or work in Korea then you must obtain a Korean DL , which is a simple procedure. International and home country DL's are valid only if you are a tourist.
Most countries require residents and employed persons to obtain a local DL. The attitude that it is ok to break laws in Korea because this isn't your countrty and you are leaving one day is a good example why foreigners have so many problems in Korea. Driving without a valid DL is actually a criminal offense in Korea and could carry jail time. You should be thankful you were not involved in an accident especially an accident involving personal injury. Many countries would arrest you AND fine you. Consider yourself lucky, pay the fine, get a Korean DL. |

To foreigners it wouldnt even appear that Korea had any laws, especially in the area of automobiles. |

Exactly. Obtaining a local license, if you have a foreign one already, is dead easy. Took me 15 minutes. |

The good people at Dave's never pass up a chance to show how condescending and self-righteous they can be. The best post on this thread so far has been DHC's meaningless rant. Hey dude, did you even bother reading the OP before going off on a limb, raving like a wingnut?
As far as I can tell, the OP hasn't complained about the possible fine, hasn't whinged at all, and did not ask for smartass comments about how dumb he is for not having his license exchanged. He simply asked for information, and you dorks blow up like a 14-year-old kid accused of having no pubes. |

I know of a number of people who've got away with it. I know one guy who's been driving for years on an expired international license and it's never been a problem. Try playing dumb and see if you can pay a moderate bribe.
Was this in a city or a small town? If it was in a small town, trying going down to the station with an influential friend or someone who knows someone on the police force. |
