|

I know there's a lot of Midwesterners out there, so I figured some people might be interested. This is a few miles from where I'm staying now. I actually biked over to the Mississippi today, but I didn't go by this particular bridge.

The Interstate Hwy. 35W bridge over the Mississippi River collapsed during the evening rush hour Wednesday, dumping at least eight cars and a truck into the water and onto the land below, creating a horrific scene of damage, fire, smoke, injuries, frantic rescuers and terrified motorists.
It was not clear how many people might be hurt or killed, but witnesses said at least 20 cars were involved. |

Bridge failures are rare (isn't that what was said in Robert Caro's "The Powerbroker," the biography of Robert Moses?) and obviously spectacular, plus this was a developing story, so I think CNN had every right to show the footage.
Rant: Minneapolis Star Tribune manages to mangle spelling of Hennepin County in what must be the most read story of the day. |

A lot of people said "Typical Korean manufacturing" when Songsu Bridge over the Han River collapsed. |

It was just built in 1967. Not too long ago for a bridge to entirely collapse. |

The collapse might have something to do with Midwest waistlines. |

Tony, nobody believes me when I tell them this, but Wisconsin actually has a lot of good looking people. Seriously, your average girl next door in Rhinelander could pose for Playboy. So knockidoff with the snide remarks. Oh wait... we're talking about Minnesota? Never mind, those people are COWS.
Joking aside, I'm worried sick. I myself used that bridge a lot, and I know a lot of people, including a number of close friends, who live or work in that neighborhood. I'm still trying to assess whether or not anyone I know was injured or killed. I am certain that even if no friends of mine were harmed, some of the victims had mutual acquaintances with me. If anyone gets any info on the names of the dead and is willing to share it with me, please PM me. |

Its just crazy. I live about 10 mins from this bridge and bike all the time by the trail that goes under the bridge. I travel on this bridge everytime I go to MPLS. A little to close to home. |

Having lived in both states, I'd say the opposite. |

I knew I was going to regret my comment. Sorry for my callousness. Wisconsinite here. I hope the best for the people involved. |

Don't worry, I wasn't offended. If you can't laugh at your own home, what can you laugh at? I grew up in Eau Claire, by the way.
And Duns said: "Having lived in both states, I'd say the opposite."
Like I said, *nobody* believes me when I say it. Call it homestate pride. |

Not to mention CNBC, Fox News, USA Today, the New York Times, and the Chicago Tribune. Just to name the coverage I've seen.
For those concerned about friends in the TCs, there are still a lot of missing people. It'll take a while for bodies to be recovered and identified. A bit longer for names to be released. |

uh, yeah... worthy of 24-hour coverage on Minnesotan t.v. and maybe U.S. national feed.
But for CNN International to pick up the feed for 12+ hours to show people in India, Korea and Eastern Europe a bridge collapse with four fatalities half a world away, hour after hour, blanket total exclusive coverage, is... simply hyping it out of all journalistic proportion, done more for its visual elements and disaster storyline, the dramatic images make for good t.v., another example of why CNN has such a bad name in the world of journalism.
BTW, 100+ people died in a train derailment today. CNN dedicated 30 seconds to it, no pics and there will be no CNN correspondent rushing to the scene in the next few hours. Where is it? Guess. If you blinked you missed it on CNN. |

Well yes, it IS good TV. It is a developing story in that we still don't know the final number of victims. It's a major engineering disaster in a wealthy country where people don't expect to die when they drive on a highway.
And I'd much rather see this than the umpteenth coverage of Paris Hilton or American Idol contestant X.
Also the whole "CNN is a bad news channel" trope is the (genius) invention of a very small group of conservative media critics who managed to propel it into mainstream consciousness. Granted, the domestic CNN feed is at times unwatchable, but so is most of the 24-hour subsection of the news industry. CNN Intl. is often bland, strangely paced, awkwardly edited -- but at least it tries to be "international" at a time of terrible cash crunches in the media industry.
"In the world of journalism," as you say, it is a rather typical news company that does what it reasonably can without bankrupting itself. |
