'Blood Sport' is cool for which of the following reasons?
a. Stealing the line straight out of the Bruce Lee flick ('Enter the Dragon': "Boards don't hit back."/ 'Blood Sport': "Bricks don't hit back.")
b. The scene with the Arab trying to take by force the blonde reporter chick while the great ARYAN Jean outwits this silly Moor.
c. Jean's European tapered jeans complete with waist reaching up to navel.
d. None of the above.
e. Didn't Jean get his ass kicked by Chuck Zito in the presence of Mickey Rourke? |

If you listen closely, you'll notice that it's actually "Bricks no hit back."
The kicker for me is the black fighter who fights like a monkey. Gotta love that 80's (not so) subtle racism! |

I watched it, mainly for the '80s cheese and Bolo. |

Yeah the 80's cheese level on this movie is definitely set to high. I love the classic scene that mimics rocky IV where Jean sees his enemy's shadow on the bus complete with a sad 80's style soft rock song. I also love the facial expressions of Jean Claude throughout the movie..especially the final battle where he gets hit in the face with salt...looks like that prik is giving birth for Christ's sakes. |

There was another Van Damage flick I saw of equal or greater cheese. I think it is simply called "the Quest". It's a similar theme, fighters from all around the world gather to duke it out.
They got a fighter from Korea who totally gets taken down by the Chinese fighter... the lamest lines come from the American contestant who is supposedly the heavyweight boxing champion, apparently this guy has never set foot outside of New York as everything is "now he's fighting like a monkey!!!"... I dunno... I can't do the cheese justice.
It is set in the past, in the 1920s I believe. Van Damme was the leader of a troupe of street urchins who stole and busked to feed themselves. Things go bad and he flees the police accidentally stowing away on a ship that is smuggling weapons to somewhere in Thailand. He is discovered and forced to work for the smugglers in shackles. Eventually the smugglers are set upon by Roger Moore and his crew, they seem to be representative of the British Navy and seize the weapons and imprison the smugglers.
In reality they are pirates/con men who turn and sell the weapons to a Thai warlord. They also sell Van Damme to the warlord and he begins to train in the Muay Thai style.

"Monkey" is a kung-fu style of fighting, not a racist thing, along with "drunken master", "snake and crane", and "iron armor". I prefer a combo of drunken master and iron armor to obliterate my opponents here on ESL cafe. |

Oh god, I'd repressed the memory of that movie and you went and dredged it up. I remember seen that movie in theaters when it came out (1996 -- I was 14) and thinking that it was awful THEN. Time hasn't been any kinder to it. |
