Boys are the groups of students that I both love and hate. I just had the class from hell tonigh.t full of boys. They drive me insane, being loud first born boys who think that they own the world and korea is the center of the universe. I hate having to do the butt whipping thing but I would say its going to be a few months before I've got these guys in shape.

However the class before is also full of boys who are a joy to teach. Really enthusiastic, will not speak korean to the point of tripping up others who speak korean, picking up errors in others work when I'm marking it (wrong spelling means you write out the word 10 times, missing punctuation earns 5 jumping jacks per class).

My girls that can be saints or problems but they don't seem to have such extremes. The boys I teach all have bucketloads of energy and if used in good way the results are awesome. However if their bad there bloody aweful.

I prefer teaching boys... especially the 8/9 year olds. Perfect age in my opinion. You can be silly with them, reason with them & teach them something all at the same time. The girls I teach (and some of them are adorable & sweet) aren't as outgoing and just don't have the same level of energy as the boys, so I tend to have more fun with the boys.

some days I prefer girls, some days boys. The naughtiest students I find are the boys, but they can also be fun to talk to. Some of the girls are way to soft spoken, I cant even hear them when Im standing right next to them. My class of all boys, apart form two girls, is the loudest, but they try hard and arent afraid of speaking. But ask me on a bad day, and I hate them.

Waterbaby, I imagine the boys have lots of fun with you as well! lol!

as for self, hmmmmmmmm. I guess I like the girls better, but it really doesn't seem to matter so much in small classes. i tend to have less fun with all-boy classes, but also fewer headaches as well.

Do you all like segregated classes better, or mixed ones?

I'm actually a bit of a fan of single sex education being a product of a girls school myself. But here I think it's really important since the gender roles are so defined here.

When the boys are around the girls tend to clam up, which is regrettable since most of them are really torqued to learn English.
I wish I could teach the girls separately.

If they're smart, well-behaved and already know some English I don't care what they are. Girls tend to learn language faster and better, different brains or whatever. They're also not as restless, really makes them better able to deal with most classes the way they are usually taught. And they tend to cooperate more, so maybe boys are more fun in competitive activities.

Definitely girls and definitely segregated girls classes. Although I don't find the girls as willing to shout out answers, it's usually misbehaving boys in mixed classes that stop me from being able to hear those quiet mousy girls. I rarely have this problem in an all-girls class. In 2.5 years my best 3 classes were only girls. I do have a lot of smart boys in my classes but they still tend to be hellions despite getting the best test results.

I'd have to generally say girls simply because they usually will work harder and 'get with the program' more readily.

Of course I enjoy the energy that the boys create. Makes the time go in quicker when you have an active class.

Behaviour wise, I'd have to say that in my over 2 years here I've only really had 2-3 students that I could do nothing with and they were all girls. When a girl is bad she's really bad. You know the type I mean... They are slightly older and have dominant personalities so they try to control the class, including the teacher.

Also, I find boys are easier to reproach then make friends with again. They're like puppy-dogs 'cuz they'll always love you. However, If you reproach a strong personality girl she will remember it and try to make your class un-teachable for the rest of the session.

are most classes segregated? Or does it depend on the hagwon?

Hagwon classes generally aren't sex-segregated (have never heard of this happening, but then I don't know that much), but public schools often are.

What a funny question. But now that I think about it I prefer when there are the same amount of each. Then there's scintillating/stimulating yin/yang balancing its way out; teasing, joking around. The boys being rowdy, active and physical in their 'boys' way. The girls being the same in their 'girls' way. A lot of the time it's fun to watch the girls getting a kick out of watching the boys go over the top and require some warning cards or time offside 'on the bench'. Looking at them like they're monkeys climbing trees.
'All girls' at a young age are terrific, very cute and tomboyish, anyway (they haven't got the princess thing down yet).
But 'all girls' at 12/13 can get their nose up, and seem a spittin' image of their demanding mothers, almost as if they've been coached to discern with a keen eye the qualitative value of each lesson. Distract them off themselves and they remember they're kids again.
'All boys' is pretty friggin' barrel-of-monkeys-ish! Wear protective clothing and keep alert! (they are playing handball with erasers).

I prefer mixed classes, and boys are easier for me to deal with. There are certain girl personalities that just drive me up the wall. I hate princess types and snobby girls, and they're manipulative enough to turn everything against me. My worst student was a girl, and oh was she bad.

I think that someone's preference to teach girls probably has something to do with the age of the girls in question. Girls here seem to go through an instant character change when they hit middle school - in a negative way. Classes I have had of 13 year old girls have been outstanding and 14 year olds dismal. A less enthusiastic and uncommunicative bunch I cannot imagine.
