Question: Often I hear, "Native Americans discovered America thousands of years before Europeans."

But, why dont those same people say "Asians discovered America thousands of years before Europeans"?

Why not take it a step further and say that Africans are the world's greatest, and only, explorers?

I love it.

And it works for all races: Asians get the new world, Africans get the world and white kids no longer have to emulate black people--they can embrace their African heritage.

On several occasions I've been told by university students that "USA invaded Koreas' land".

At first I expected yet another rant about the Korean War or the U.S. 8th Army.

Seems their professor had taught them this fact using the following 'logic'

a) Mongol people migrated across the land bridge into N/America

b) 'Indians' are Mongol people

c) Mongol people are really Korean people

d) Americans invaded and took the land from 'Indians'

e)So actually...Americans invaded Korean land and took it from Korean people

f) The professors' final conclusion....??

American people did this to keep Korea from being a world superpower

Hmmm... this seems a little made up by me. Let's just say a Korean person did in fact say this, he should at least say the British, Spanish and French invaded Korean land.

Wasn't it the British "pilgrims" who invaded and took the land from the Indians... They did come from the UK.... (no such place as america before they came.......)??

So even the professor cannot get his facts correct - he should have said..

"The British people did this to keep Korea from being a world superpower"

There's a difference between noticing something and true discovery. We all notice gravity. However, Newton actually discovered the basic laws of gravitation. Sure the vikings arrived here from Europe first. But they didn't exactly stay. Sure what if the Chinese sighted America first? What really matters is it was Columbus who not only sighted America but fully understood its significance as a land for commercial settlement.

To quote Teller (of Penn and Teller)

Quote:
To discover is not merely to encounter, but to comprehend and reveal, to apprehend something new and true and deliver it to the world.

It's really the difference between the Korean printing press and the Gutenberg press. The Korean press was only distributed to royalty. The Gutenberg press was immediately adopted for common and popular use. The true significance of discovering metal type isn't metal type but discovering the application. Giving metal type to a king doesn't do jack for society. Giving metal type to the public transforms society.

To wit, small computer networks may have existed before the Internet, but one can't claim you invented the internet because you were the first to wire three computers over a phone line. It was the application of a wide network to broad public use that is the true invention.

Sometimes I see Asians that could pass for Navajo and it's very interesting. The Navajos only lived in SW America 300 years before the Spanish arrived. They are the most recent additions to the Native American scene and can be directly traced back to Asia--where as some of the other tribes are harder to trace.

^Navajos are originally from Canada

Does this mean that Asians have to pay reperrations to Africans for stealing their land? With a conservative 6% interest rate, All Asian countries would be instantly bankrupted! And I would be out of a job. Confused
