RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice pressed Israel and the Palestinians on Thursday to talk about the key issues that would lead to the creation of a Palestinian state.

The most troublesome of these are the so-called final status matters -- the future of Jerusalem, the borders of a Palestinian state and the right of return of refugees.

Israel is balking at such a broad commitment at this stage, but Rice noted Prime Minister Ehud Olmert had said he was ready to discuss fundamental issues leading to a Palestinian state, though she gave no details.

I am curious what others think about this issue. I feel that if the Arabs were open prior to 1967 to Israelis having easy access to the wailing wall prior to 1967, then this wouldn't be an issue today.

The other feeling is that if the palestinians can't agree over gaza and west bank then how can we expect jews, muslims and christians to agree over the Holy City.

I understand the history of the region and the reasons why the other nations don't want to become involved, so I think the US is expecting too much from Israel. (p.s. not a jew or a muslim).

Yes Israel ought to declare that except for the West Wall , East Jerusalem isn't really part of "Jerusalem".

Then then Israel say Palestinian side is welcome to that area and Israel ought to claim it didn't make any concessions about Jerusalem and that all of what really is "Jerusalem" belongs to Israel.

one possible scenario is west jerusalem as the israeli capital and east jerusalem as the palestinian capital and the old city as a neutral or world heritage zone administered by a joint israeli/palestinian committee. of course there are numerous problems with any solution. ironic really when jerusalem means city of peace.

many years ago when israel wanted to remove the masses of tv aerials in the old city and replace with one central aerial to reduce the cluttered look, the arabs protested because they thought it meant the israelis would control their tvs and what programs they could watch.

of course i'm sure those who are anti israel would claim that israel keeping any part of jerusalem would be just be a land grab by the israelis. Wink

Right then.....

And Australia New Zealand, Canada and the United States (and Argentina, Chile etc.) should all give their countries back to the native peoples?

The Israelis should immediately announce plans to raze the Dome of the Rock and to start rebuilding the Temple. Then after a week of the Ayrabs and th Yurpeens screaming announce that due to public opinion that they will leave the present situtation in place.

The world would then breathe a sigh of relief and dradt a UN resolutions and declare "peace in our time".

Confused
