Taxi driver in NYC says to me "With Koreans, it's always trouble; every time in the news if it's about Koreans, it's always some kind of trouble they've caused or been a part of."
And I'd have to agree with him. Let's look back at this year so far alone the stories involving Koreans that hit the national and international news:
Korean kills 32 at university
Korean couple involved in ridiculous suit over lost pants at their laundry.
Korean father torches car in Toronto, killing his son and daughter.
Korean couple dies in flash flood after trying to call 911, hanging up and calling their family members instead.
Korean prostitutes in . . . well . . everywhere
Korean woman attends university in California for months even though she was not a registered student at any university.
Koreans taken hostage in Afghanistan.
And let's not forget the North Koreans and all their antics.
Going back over the last couple of years:
SNU professor fabricates gene research and results
Korean farmers jailed in Hong Kong for breaking the law in their demonstrations against a meeting of economic powers.
Where is the good news? Sports? An occasional famous golf player?
<><><> Another, related line of thought: Can you think of one story coming out in the last . . five years . . . ten years . . . and making national and international headlines and notoriety about a Japanese person or group involved in some kind of similar trouble? Or Taiwanese? ( Now I'm sure someone's going to Google it and come up with something;but whatever you come up with, it's going to be obscure, not notorious. )

I think Japan used all theirs up in the 1930s/40s. They're waiting for a new batch.

Hey Charlie, you forgot about the kidnappings of Korean fisherman and oilworkers in Nigeria and Somalia. |

Completely different level and type of "trouble".
The "trouble" being pointed out in this thread is the kind of day-to-day pain-in-the-arse type.
And what say you for the Taiwanese? Or the Hong Kongers? Or the Singaporeans? (Comparing other "Tiger" countries.) |

Dude, that's not fair. The problem in that case was an idiot white-bread
judge! |

You assume it was a white judge.
The judge was black, and the suit was part of a long-standing and simmering conflict between racist Koreans and how they treat blacks. |

And how did they get themselves into the situation? And why don't we hear of this kind of thing with "a poor hardworking immigrant Japanese couple, Taiwanese couple" ?? |

And don't forget the Korean sailors who have contributed to making Kiribati a place for child prostitution:
"Prostitution involving Korean fishermen and local women in the
Pacific island nation of Kiribati, an issue serious enough for the
island to ban Korean ships from docking there two years ago, is on
the rise again.
Korean sailors are again buying sex in
the small country. Of the 24 Kiribati women who in the most recent
study said they had sold sex to Korean men, seven were under the age
of 18. One was as young as 14.
In 2005, the problematic behavior of Korean fishermen became so
serious that Kiribati authorities decided to prohibit Korean ships
from docking there.
Local Kiribati activists estimate that
between 40 to 50 Kiribati women are engaged in prostitution with
Korean men there on port calls, and that every year the women engaged
in such activity are getting younger.
Investigators said the Korean government needs to do something..."

Isn't this just like the problem in Afghanistan? The Korean government does nothing to control its citizens and then turns around and cries like babies when something goes wrong. What if Korean sailors were kidnapped in Kiribati? The govt would have had ample time to prevent something like that happening. |

I wasn't naturally assuming he was white. I thought I saw a picture of him, and thought he was white.
I stand corrected. Thanks.
So I rewrite the sentence as "the problem in that case was a stupid American-born judge, not the Korean-born shop owners."
Correct me again if he wasn't born in America.
In any case, the problem wasn't the Koreans. |

You stupid idiot! If the same stupid judge had gone to a Japanese couple, Taiwanese couple, Pakistani couple he would've still been the SAME IDIOT JUDGE! Fact is, court ruled on the side of the Koreans--thus, NOT THEIR FAULT! |

In that specific example, the Koreans were not at fault.
To get at the wider context of why it happened, you have to examine the horrible racism towards Black Americans (and all non-Koreans/Whites) that exists as a dominant feature of Korean "culture". The Judge was apparently fed up with the way "they" (Koreans, though maybe not the ones in question) treated him.
His suit was retarded. But there is a wider context that fits well into this thread. |

Again, how did they find themselves in this situation? And how do Koreans find themselves so frequently in the kind of notorious international news stories (while their East Asian neighbors don't) (or even their Southeast Asian trading partners)? |

It might be that because we all have experiences in Korea that we notice the nonsense of Koreans more. |

Any chance of looking what the yanks have done over the past four or five years that might make this thread a little more realistic, I think that outweighs anything the koreans have done. 7 people die when a bridge collapses and it's on the news constantly. No pity anymore I'm sorry. Saturation point has been reached with pity for America. |

Because life is a competition with "X" and America. Right, cowboy? You can't criticize Korea on her own without some Korean making the immediate OH YEAH WELL AMERICA IS WORSE as if only 2 nations exist on our planet.
Talk about an essentialised other, eh? |
