I've recently accepted a position at an international school and just wanted to get an idea of the salary range for these positions in Korea. I have a BA and teaching certification for my province in Canada. I also have over seven years teaching experience, mostly EFL but also content area subjects and substituting in Canada.

For those currently working in international schools in Korea, or those of you who have in the past, what should one expect as a staring salary based on a BA with certification? What additional benefits could one expect? Is much more offered for those with masters degrees? I could make more than the offered salary at a public school but I didn't choose the international one for the money. I did for other reasons most notably:

Smaller class sizes
experience that REALLY conunts in North American/international schools
ablity to teach content subjects not just EFL...YAWN!
lots more vacation

Thanks for any responses! Smile

What do you mean by "REALLY conunts in North American schools"? (Assume you mean counts.) I have two years of hogwon experience on my license.

A really good international school (and even the mediocre ones) should be paying you what you would make back home, plus a ticket to and back each year, family or moving allowance, rebates or free tuition for your kids and almost always pay for your apartment. Most do this, considering the rich kids paying tuition. If you are getting too much less than this, check to make sure it is even a "real" international school!

Only the top schools in Seoul really pay the equivalent of what you would make back home (and you need to go to the international recruiting conferences to get hired there).... I'm certified with a graduate degree and I'd rather be teaching middle school, but the offers I've gotten from other International Schools (not the big ones in Seoul) were so bad I'm sticking with university.... The only people who really make out with the salaries they offer are people who are married with school age kids since they get much bigger free housing, free tuition and additional ticket allowances for their kids..... Most offers I've seen are for less than your low-end hagwon job and in no case more than what the Korean public schools are paying as base salary...

What licence? Yes, one or two years EFL experience (especially overseas) is useful for getting jobs in the west but more than two really doesn't do much to help. A common question which is asked for jobs back home is: Do you have experience teaching a North Amercan based curriculum?

Yes, I will make a bit less than I could in public school but I get way better holidays and the experience is what I'm after.

Thanks for the responses. Can anyone give a ballpark figure (in won) of a good international school starting salary?

Cheers,

I don't know anything, but I suspect an international school will be a better experience all-around. More professional, more career-orientated, etc. etc.

The hagwon and public school "assistant teacher" thing might be fun for a couple of years, but it's definitely not a career builder.

Yeah, I imagine the long international school holidays would come in handy for those photo shoots in SE Asia, eh buddy?
