Just curious as to how closely people follow the dress code stipulations within public school contracts. I realise that T's and jeans are out of the questions but what do you guys normally wear?

Also I've just received a recently updated contract for a Public School Daegu position which mentions a new form you have to fill out to get the 2 year tax free status when working. I realise I need a Residence Certificate from my country but it also mentions I have to fill out ' "an Application for Tax Exemption" on non-resident's Korean source income provided under the Korean Tax Treaty."

I presume this is just a form from the Korean tax department? Does anybody have a link to an online version of this form. I had a quick look around the Korean tax website but it doesn't seem to have anything.

Theres a clause in your contract about clothes? I wear jeans to my middle school. Korean male teachers typically wont but the women do all the time.

First time I wore jeans to my current school I was a bit apprehensive how my vice-principal would react but he actually seemed pleased & drew attention to them -- "Young style, good!" He's taken to wearing jeans occasionally himself now.

Better to overdress a bit at first though. First impressions count.

At my public school men dress to a higher standard than woman. For me (male) that means dress slacks and dress shoes always. Sport coat with no tie or tie with no Sport coat for day-to-day teaching. Both coat and tie for special occasions. I am on par with most male teachers, however, some Korean teachers ware coat and tie on a regular bases that has been relaxed in the warmer weather.

For woman about 50% ware nice jeans and a nice top or a tee-shirt with a cardigan sweeter over the top. The other 50% more formal skirt and top.

I wear tennis shoes ALL the time to my PS. I wear a collared shirt, sometimes tucked, sometimes not, and slacks and khakis.

For me its a suit. Been mentioned a couple of times that I still have to wear it, even though I dropped the word jeans into a conversation,

Depends on the school like many things here do.

Completely depends on the school, each school is different. So basically it's the same as in the US/Canada for the most part. Sometimes dressing formally can help, other times it doesn't.

Every school is different. SMOE doesn't have anything in the rules or contract about hair, earrings or facial hair. I know teachers completely shaved bald, head and face, and other who have long hair and facial hair. One guy I know was told by the principal he couldn't grow a beard. It's not in the contract, though, and the guy didn't have to comply (though the principal didn't like it, or him since then).

I wore a dress shirt with a tie every day for about 3 months before I finally started to wear jeans. During the summer I wear jeans every day, and frankly I don't care if the other teachers think it's not appropriate because they just sit in the teacher's room watching movies. Some of the male teachers have worn jeans, a t-shirt and flip flops without socks. Once the second semester starts I'll go back to more formal attire

At my school it's a very mixed bunch. Some teachers were semi fomral stuff all the time while others wear jeans, t-shirts and denim skirts.

I usually wear dress pants and a collared shirt. Occasionally I'll throw a tie on, or for special occasions, even a jacket, but that's not often. I also occasionally wear jeans, but not that often during regular class sessions. The only comment that I ever received was from a female teacher who told me I look good in jeans. I don't know if she really meant that or if there was something deeper behind that comment.

The basic rule of thumb whereever you are is dress well the first couple of days and follow the other teachers lead. It's better to be overdressed than underdressed.

Uh, jeans and a tee-shirt.

Seriously. Clean jeans with a belt, and a nice tee-shirt (collared or dressy-ish -- no logos, no cheapies) tucked in.

I would think they would see it as appropriate as if you affixed the lid of a metal garbage can to the top of your head and called it a fashion statement.

My friend was asked to take out all his obvious piercings and others he covered up with a plaster.
He was told his piercings "infected" the students.
