This is amazing! Have a great time mate - im sure the experience will be something to remember.

Couple of things i was thinking:

1) I hope you like your own company, as I would guess it's going to get pretty lonely/boring after a while with the lack of entertainment options/socialising/books etc

2) You will genuinely be one of the FEW people in the world to have an experience like this. North Korea will be history soon enough, and nowhere else in the world is that isolated, so you will have experiences that hardly anyone else will be able to share or replicate. Thats pretty amazing in my opinion.

3) Can you write? Because if it was me i'd be setting up a book deal now.

4) Will you have a permanent government guard/guide/official watching over you?

Finally, good luck and have a great time!

Well good luck with that. Hopefully you're a pretty sane and level-headed person who doesn't need antidepressants or whatever. I can hardly imagine life up there. I wonder how much of it you will get, or be allowed, to see. Wonder how many other foreigners are up there teaching English. I'd say watch out for cleanliness of food and water, wouldn't want to get too sick. Guess you'll need to bring whatever you can, I'm sure it's hard to find almost anything. Not a fast food junkie are you? Wink

There is actually a modicum of an ex-pat community. Some Germans, British, French, Mongols, Japanese, Russians, Chinese, etc. There is a nightclub with (surprise surprise) Mongolian girls catering to the foreigners. There is also an import store run by a Russian company that has some European and Japanese goods.

I'm not so sure. I have met people who have been to North Korea, admittedly on 3-day and 5-day EXPENSIVE-as-sin holidays.

For all I know, it might be one of the most boring books in the history of literature.

Monday: Taught and slept. Also ate.

Tuesday: Ate and slept after teaching.

Wednesday: Had a good night's sleep after classes and dinner.

I will have a "custodian" during the weekday, and two "custodians" on weekends.

Scan the stamp in your passport and make that your new avatar!

Oh, shouldn't your diary also include:

4. Jumped in bed with another Mongolian???

If you do want to learn any Mongolian, I'll give you Nina's number. I know one word: "Say-no" means "Hello".

I never said anything to anyone because I felt it was a super long shot and not worth mentioning. I applied for a few star positions a few months ago, mostly at embassies here and abroad. One was a waiter position in the Spanish Embassy in Seoul. Another was a "Good man Friday" position for an Ambassador.

Now that I have been offered the position in principle, I have to get some time off work to do my interviews, which should be a kettle of fun.

As for the stamp, I do not know if I will get a stamp before or after I leave here. I do know that as an almost certainty I will have to go to N.K. via China.

As for internet, I WILL have access with the embassy, but limited. There are hundreds of little pieces of metal in space that relay information all over the surface of the Earth.

As for my girlfriend....I will remain faithful to her. I love her. No Mongol girls for me!

Whiner, did you have to interview for the job in the U.K? Remember seeing a posting for a job in NK elsewhere through the British Counsel. They wanted to interview the candidates in the UK. Maybe this didn't apply to you.

They also have a casino for foreigeners in Pyongyang
