Yes, that's good news. They also had a nice extra increase in their budget over what was originally planned thanks to a Democratic congress. The other big news today of course is that the Phoenix lander was launched. The shuttle's also going up in a few days and Dawn will be launching soon.
The bad news? Weather on Mars is still super dusty and the rovers are just sitting around waiting for either the weather to clear up or until their batteries die out. Let's all hope the dust clears, and soon. |

From the yahoo article:
Quote: |
The Phoenix bird has risen. We're on our way to Mars," said the mission's lead scientist Peter Smith, with the University of Arizona.
He was not just speaking in metaphor. Phoenix, like the mythical bird that rises from its ashes, was pieced together from spare parts of predecessor Mars probes that never reached the red planet. |
But wait. He's still speaking in metaphor. Using bird for a rocket is metaphor. Using spare parts to make another probe and calling it Phoenix is still metaphor. It's all metaphor. |

It's basically a high-technology tit-shaped vessel. With people inside. That flies around space.

The shuttle was a nice idea but turns out the best thing to do is put men at the top of something where nothing is going to hit it on the way up and you can rocket them out if your candle is going to explode. |
