I heard this from a British guy I know. What exactly is a chav? Is it like white trash in the states?

Sort of,

It means you wear elasticated caps, have a moustache in the style of an 11 yr old mexican, wear sovereign rings, eat Findus Crispy pancakes and Rustlers instant burgers more days than not and use words like Innit, Issit, eeyar and generally think you live in South Central when you live in Rochdale, Welwyn Garden City or Milton Keynes.

Is that helpful?

Quote:
Chav or Charv/Charver even Chavster (male) and Chavette (female) ('ch' pronounced as in chair) is a mainly derogatory slang term in the United Kingdom for a subcultural stereotype fixated on fashions derived from American Hip-Hop fashions and stereotypes such as gold jewellery and designer clothing combined with elements of working class British street fashion. Chavs are generally considered to have no respect for society, and to be ignorant or unintelligent. The term appeared in mainstream dictionaries in 2005.[1][2]

Chavs come in all shapes, sizes and colours. Even the most beautiful Britsih Chinese girl can be a chav (usually when they open their mouth)

A chav is essentially a British wigger. Weren't you pretending to be a wigger when you first came to this site?
