-My favorite was when a south-american student at Uni called me to my face, "An average, mono-lingual, untraveled ethno-centric american". I didn't even respond, just started to laugh. I couldn't understand how anyone from a self-professed "international" perspective could make so many innacurate statements in one sentence.
-And on another note. American beer sucks. We know it! Could germans and czechz stop telling us every 15 minutes in a bar,
-Der Beer Here. It iz very bad.
We know. Why do you think we have so many imports? But no, you say can I buy you a drink, and there like "Not that american piss beer!" Like what. And then they say Stella Artois is schizen and I just give up and hit on a fat chick. Cause they are always grateful.

American beer is the best in the world. American microbreweries consistently dominate internation beer competitions. Its just that American mass-market beer is crap.

This is a bit different, but we Americans refer to black/African people around the world as African-Americans. Even those that were born and live in Europe.

I was just thinking how the term African American should be discontinued. Black Americans should be just called Americans.

If people want to continue using the term African America, then to be fair, white Americans should be called European Americans.

First, I don't call blacks in other countries African-American. So the person who said "we" Americans do that needs to speak for himself.

Second, my M. Ed. was through a "multicultural" program. You can bet that all of the teachers (white and black) were having us use "African-American, European-American, Asian-American" by the end of the first term.

Made me slightly crazy.

someone posted before about how there are too many 'self-loathing americans' who are just trying 'to get in good with their european friends'

i think that's a bit unfair. I was very much a 'self-loathing' american before i came to Korea...um, that's why i left the country in the first place, just had to get out.

and i 'knew' the world hated americans, but i was really shocked, and quite frankly hurt, by all of the american bashing i have to put up with here. sure i agree with a lot of it, and a lot of it is funny, but after awhile i start to feel really beat down and truly loathed by others. Crying or Very sad

I really can't help where I was born, and how my culture/society functions. there are a lot of americans who dont like the same things about america that everyone else hates. but its like when you say, "gawd, my mom is such a b*tch" its fine when you say it, but when your best friend says "yeah, your mom is a b*tch" you gotta punch them in the face. so in the end, I defend my country abroad more than i ever would at home.
stop hating you haters
cant we all just get along and at least try not to judge eachother by nationality and race? Razz

I agree! Very Happy

Wouldnt it be safe to say that anyone that generalizes an entire nation of people is also kind of stupid? America is a diverse group of people with geniuses and idiots all boxed in together.

Yes, its different if youve lived in America and dealt with a large number of Americans, but for others who havent lived hereor haven't met many Americans-- they are wrong to generalize every single one of us. If someone stereotyped an ethnic group the same way people stereotype Americans, he or she would be called racist.

The whole world has a love-hate relationship with us. They criticize us to no end with our government, yet they all want to move here. They watch American shows and movies. Even in Muslim countries like Jordan, they watch Desperate Housewives and CSI Miami faithfully. They protest America while jamming to our music in their I-pods. They immigrate here in insane numbers. They want to learn American slang (not much of a demand for Canadian slang).

Being from America isn't so bad, don't let them get you down.

And it shouldn't, because the best players in baseball, with the exception of some who choose to play in their home countries or region due to exceptional popularity or endorsement opportunities, play in MLB. Evidently, you know jack about professional baseball... Rolling Eyes Look at the demographics of MLB.

You are right generalizations are bad, and usually cost the person a good friend or contact too. It happens a lot with Americans too unfortunately.

I completely disagree with the second part though. If I had a girl friend I loved who had a compulsive spending habit, I wouldn't just dump her. There would be so many things I love about her and would want to stay with her, but I would still complain and try to fix her obvious problem that is taking me down with her.

HERE HERE! Anyone who has ever walked into a liquor store (or even a convenient store) knows there is a rediculous variety of microbrew beer options. Same goes for any decent pub. When Euro's say "American beer" they are just thinking of Bud, Miller, or some other mass brand.

Yeah, but the things that people complain about are things we have no control over. I can control myself, and if you want to complain about something I personally did then I would deserve that.(Ooo...like a gf that spends too much money on shoes Very Happy )

But if someone wants to complain about me being American because of the unjust things America has done in the past that wouldnt be fair.

You wouldnt go to Japan and get mad at some random person on the street for Japan enslaving Korean women during the war, unfair treaties with China and Korean, using biological weapons against poor Chinese, or the Nanjing Massacre--but people hold the average American responsible for everything the American government has ever done. See what I'm getting at?

No, but it would be really funny if we did. I hate you England, cause I watched this movie with Mel Gibson, and you burnt up people in church!

Yes, let's take a look at some demographics, shall we?

MLB currently operates in 2 countries; the US and Canada - and only one team in Canada at that. MLB players currently represent 8 nations - 9, if you count Puerto Rico as an independent nation.

The NHL (that's National Hockey League) operates in just two countries, just like MLB. The NHL currently comprises players from 25 countries, and players of 43 different nationalities have been represented throughout the history of the NHL. Certainly a much more "worldly" league than the aforementioned MLB.

The NHL championship is called the "Stanley Cup"; however, one never hears the winner of the Cup referred to as "World Champions" (except maybe on Fox!)

We could take a look at the NBA and NFL "World Champions" if you like, too...

Thanks for the advice.

Yes, of course. I said generalizations are bad and should never be used (like in your example). But people can still complain about America, as it really does affect them too.

Really, I don't think so. They would be African or African-Germans or French Africans or whatever.

Unfortunately there are those that do call blacks from other countries African-Americans. That's why it gets to be on the list of funny things Americans say.

A discussion of the term African American and related terms can be found in the journal article "The Politicization of Changing Terms of Self Reference Among American Slave Descendants" in American Speech v 66 is 2 Summer 1991 p. 133-46.
