That baffled me about Japan. I lived in Japan in the winter 2001/2002. My apartment was freezing!!! I used those little kerosene heaters but they make the air funny and gave me a headache. Also going outside in the rain to re-fill the kerosene tank was a major pain.
Is it just traditional building methods that stop the Japanese installing heating systems? |
I think so. Also, a friend told me that the high earthquake risk made it impracticle to install the same system. I don't know how true that is.
I refuse to use the Kerosene. I just switch my air con to heater but it's damn expensive!! |

Mine isn't working  How do I make it work? Does the building need it turned on, or what? I am getting cold, and i hate having to sit in my bed to keep warm. |

Set the thermostat at about 16-17C. Spend your money on good wool socks and sweaters and a few blankets.
No one should be comfortably walking around the house in their underwear in mid-January.

I like walking around in my underwear all times of the year. In winter the only addition is the track dacks. Ahh..tracky dack season is here.  |

I too have never experienced the luxury that is living in an apartment with ondol heating. 
Oh well, at least this year I don't have to worry about any wobbly space heaters tipping themselves over! |

Will really miss my wood stove this winter though, you don't deserve heat unless you carried the source in from the wood pile and lit it yourself  |

Geez, people are setting their thermostats for 16 or 17 or even 20?! Isn't quality of life an issue here? Spring for the bucks, turn the heat up! Get comfy.
Here in the bear den we just leave the hot water in the tub and let it heat the house. Ummm, hot humid air in da house.
Hot water and electric blankets - Yeee hawwww.
Later though, when the days get short, I get real sleepy for a few months and don't use the heat at all.

last year my boss told me that it was more econimical to use the ondol only intermittantly. i used to turn it off whenever i was out. when i got home i was turn it up high and really warm up the floor, then turn it way down low. gas bills were high however.
this year i have a new apartment with electrical ondol. it is on a fixed timer that i cannot change. i can turn it off and change the thermostat, but i can't turn it on outside the hours of 10pm to 6am. the electricity to the ondol is only available at night - apparently its cheaper this way. we shall see how it works soon.
am resisiting the urge to turn it on, despite wombat's plaintive whimpering and teeth chattering, as i would rather be cold than broke.... |

Electrical Ondol... it's so cheap! I used to use Oil powered Ondol couple of years ago; used to cost a fortune. Now I leave it on all winter with a thermostat (at about 20 degrees) for all the winter and it only puts an extra 25,000 won or so on the bill...
Not really cold enough to put the Ondol on yet though...??? I find the weather refreshingly cool.

Try turning it on??? All the systems are different. Try asking your boss or a korean friend to help u out? |

It is on! the the little pointer thing is set at a cosy 20 degrees, but no heat is happening. My boss doesn;t speak english. IF its not on by the beginning of nov, heads will roll. |

I'm hoping the weather stays pretty much the same for 2 more weeks. Be pretty sweet if I don't have to turn on the heater before I leave. Still have the window open during the day but sadly have to close it at night these days.
I'm definitly enjoying fall more this year since I don't have to dred the oncoming winter. Cold weather, yuck. |
