| I've got Friday afternoon off so am planning on heading to a nice beach somewhere for the weekend. Any tips on where to (and not to) go? I was thinking the East coast - maybe samcheok or Hwajinpo? I'm looking for beautiful, secluded and quiet (quite a tall ordar in august in Korea I suppose). any advice welcome... |

Hwaijinpo is the opposite of secluded and quiet in August, trust me, I've been there then.
Forget the map, it's only 4 hours and fifteen minutes from Nambu terminal in Seoul to Gohyeon on Geoje Island on the southeast coast. How? By bat-out-of-hell express luxury comfy first class bus. Buses leave more than once per hour!
Some of these beaches are less crowded:

Hint: Avoid Hakdong beach and Wayheon beach to skip the crowds. Just take the island coastal local bus and it'll go past 8-10 beaches, some of which you will be tempted to get off at, trust me. |

| Also keep an eye on Typhoon 'Rabbit', which is expected to enter the Sea of Japan / East Sea overnight. |

| went to deokjeokdo in the end - had been once before about a month ago and was a beautiful sleepy little town, big empty beach... but completely different kettle of fish this time - a stage on the beach and rooms triple the price, ripped off for everything (didnt help that is was raining and that the ferry "broke" and so we had to wait 4 hours until there was one that wasnt fully booked ... avoid august for deokjeokdo - july is amazing though! |

hahaha...Korea and secluded are two words that do NOT go together. You either have toi love people or learn to tolerate them to survive here...or just hide out in your apartment like I do sometimes. Stop having so many babies people! I can't even go outside and walk anymore. I'm either bumping into people or moving over because of cars. |

Korea has one of the (if not the lowest) birth rates in the World.
You bumping into people isn't caused by overpopulation. You bumping into people is more likely caused by the fact that you don't look where you go because you are too busy admiring yourself. |

I've purposefully avoided the beaches in part because I don't want to deal with insane crowds of people, but I'm planning on going in September. Other than less crowds, I'd like a beach with sand, not pebbles or shells. The main beach I went to at home was Galveston on the Gulf of Mexico which is absolute crap, so it won't be hard to surpass what I'm used to. Because I'll probably go over a weekend I'd like to keep the travel time kind of short but easy, and the cost down. Any suggestions?
Oh, and I'm in Anyang. |
