Growing number of South Korean women seek feline company
A growing number of unmarried working women in South Korea are sharing their homes with cats. Independent-minded, young women prefer quiet cats to noisy dogs because they consider cats a clean, neat and convenient alternative to demanding dogs, according to a Seoul-based association for cat lovers named Corea Cat Club.
Around 100,000 people live with cats only, the club estimates, adding, that the majority are working women in their 20s and 30s who are too busy to take good care of pets. Women appreciate the companionship of cats, the club notes.
"Cats do not bark and they do know where to poo. Cats do not often demand your attention," said Jeong In-Gyung, 35. She shares her home with a cat she adopted after it was abandoned on the street in 2004.
"I just prepared breakfast for my cat and leave for office. I don't have to worry about her. She can take a good care of herself," she added.

Reminds me of a young Korean female friend. Does not want to get married or have children. However, loves cats (has a couple at home).

Of all my female adult acquaintances in Korea, I'd have to say more than half of them have a cat. It is pretty surprising. Then again, my friends aren't representative of the Korean population. |

Here's a translation of a JoongAng Ilbo article from the KoreaBeat blog.

Three years ago Ms. Jang Mi-seon (35), who lives alone, began keeping a cat. At first she took the chance to discover a cat left outside on the street, but as she spent time with it and the difficulty of taking care of the cat diminished she is now keeping two of them. Jeong bursts with pride over them, saying in the morning. Theyre easy to take care of, so cute and loveable and really my companions in life.
Cats are all the rage with committed single women in their 20s and 30s. For the last 4 years the animal-loving population has gone up considerably, with businesses estimating a three-fold increase. The Corea Cat Club has claimed that, currently there are over 100,000 people with cats and the number of beloved pet cats being kept has surpassed 40,000. On portal sites such as Naver and Daum over 10,000 people have subscribed to 11 different cafes for cat lovers. Lee Ji-yeong, manager of the 7ROCK pet store in Chungmuro in Seoul, said, these days the sales ratio of dogs to cats is 6 to 4. Lots of women in their 20s and 30s especially are seeking out cats.
Cats are pulling in lots of popularity as pets because they dont bark loudly as dogs do, they carefully and quietly take care of their own waste, and they have a sleek charm. Most of them have an independent character, making them attractive for their ability to amuse themselves. Young women put up pictures taken with their cats to the internet cafe called our kids, pouring out their love.

Maybe. Takes 'em out of my dating pool. I'm allergic to them.
If I like the cat, and spend time with it,
I'll get semi-immune to it in a week or so.
'Twould have to be a special girl to drag me through that, which I guess defeats the purpose. |

Weird, Earth Times translated the same article I did... I guess readers can decide who did the better job.
I think the poo-cleanliness thing is a big attraction. I remember a former student of mine who kept a dog but didn't really know how and just let it poop on the veranda rather than take it for walks. |

I hate cats.
Do you trust most Koreans with pets? I remember my first job in Korea, we were having a going away party for this Kiwi chick, when my female boss told us that she thinks her male dog gets lonely at home, so she whacks him off until he cums on her arm.
The kiwi chick choked on her beer, I couldn't stop laughing - I was pretending to cough, ran to the toilet, and had a good laugh for a minute or so, all the while hearing my Korean female boss going off about lonely male dogs and her lazy husband.
I hated that boss, and she hated me. Good times all around I guess. |

The article says women do, but doesn't approach why women do. What is the point? |

Yuck! That's sick! I've also heard some Moms whack their teen sons off to help them release their stress from studying...sick, sick, sick...no wonder some of the men have unhealthy mommy attachments. |
