My co-worker would like to buy a cellphone, but she has some questions that I could not answer.

I'm thinking about getting a cell phone. The basics have been explained. Like only paying for out going calls and buying your phone up front or paying for it in your bill over time.

But I was wondering if you knew anything about service contracts, the cost of a plan vs prepaid minutes, text messaging charges, which company has the best price/coverage, and if I can buy a phone that has an English language setting.

Any help you could give would be appreciated. Thanks.

Is the coworker a foreigner living in Korea?

I have yet to see a phone without an English menu.

At most places she will not be able to get a plan phone without having a KOREAN credit card. She can get a KOREAN credit card through Samsung IF she is public school or university, but good luck if she's hogwon.

Prepaid is about twice the cost of plan phones, I believe.

Apparently she can get a phone with a deposit, but I have no clue how as KTF doesn't offer it and you need a "check card" for it and Hana seems to not want to give me a check card.

Thanks Atavistic,

My co-worker is a foreigner.

KTF.....hmmm. Does anyone know if a foreigner needs a credit card to get a phone or service with SK?

Thanks.

Used card phones in Itaewon (and elsewhere) are available for 50,000 plus 20,000 in calls. Just pay 10,000 monthly (or more) after that to keep it running. Works for me. Had one of those for 3 years.

I am bringing my phone over from the UK as it's a smartphone which I use for other non-phoney things. Is it possible to just get a pay as you go sim card when I arrive?

I think you can get a SIM card. I've seen them on eBay even. The problem is, does the phone support Korean language? I know that for me, I want to be able to text in Korean. So I guess, I could buy a new handset in the UK that supports Korean, then bring it.. hm?

Any phone made after say 2005 will have an English menu, all the companies have great coverage, but LG is the most foreign friendly.

LG requires a 30,000W deposit, and you have to set it up to automatically withdraw from a Korean bank account. Bring your bankbook- they'll handle it from there.

Phones from other countries don't work in Korea, sim card or not, as Korea uses a different type of network than anywhere else in the world

But what about foreign network coverage? So, can I still use my phone in Korea on my current UK network as if I could in Europe - Just until I get a phone.

You can use your foreign phone on global roaming but you cannot get a korean number for it.
