The annual university rankings are out. Congrats SNU for being number 160!!

That's why I don't get why companies will literally not hire someone if they didn't go to a certain college. The whole system of kids being deprived of a childhood and proper sleep is premised upon SNU being 'elite', and it's actually not even on the radar. Sucks.

Those rankings are bunk anyhow. The Times HES gives my Alma Mater, University of Queensland the 46th ranking while this one puts it at 102-150. Bit of a discrepancy. But yes, in terms of showing that this country has a lot to achieve in order to get their tertiary institutions to world standard, this list is somewhat useful.

yeah, i think those ratings are a little off. no way the london school of economics should be in the 151-200 range, and the same goes for the national univeristy of singapore. the university of hong kong ranked around 220? yeah, right.

the times HES is a much better system imo.

Don't know why anyone in Korea would be shocked by SNU's lackluster international performance when it can't even break ranks in the top twenty of Asia.

While this may be somewhat helpful it is still just a list made by subjective people. In the FAQ they say as much.

"The quality of universities cannot be precisely measured by mere numbers. Therefore, any ranking is controversial and no ranking is absolutely objective. People should be cautious about any ranking including our Academic Ranking of World Universities.

It would be impossible to have a comprehensive ranking of universities worldwide, because of the huge differences of universities in the large variety of countries and the technical difficulties in obtaining internationally comparable data. "

Keep in mind that education is a multibillion dollar industry now and much of this is just sales, marketing of their university. A lot of jobs and futures ride on how these lists come out. People should NOT decide their future academic choices biased on these biased lists. Education at the undergraduate level is a business.

For example, a university will advertise that they have a nobel prize winner on their staff but it will turn out that a grad student will do most of the teaching.

Also, western universities have a comparative advantage in the graduate level NOT the undergraduate university level. For example, intro biology in a typical university in the US may have over 200 students in one classroom. There's no advantage in taking such a class overseas over taking that in korea.

Since many US universities have larger financial endowments/money, it makes sense to pursue post graduate education there. At the undergraduate level it's all just mostly marketing and nonsense.

A korean graduate of seoul national university can do very well at the graduate level in any Ph.d. course. Seoul graduates of biology have also taught undergrads at MIT.
