So before I come here, I hear nothing but how fast Korean internet is. Apparently its 10Mbps and never lags out, etc etc.
Well I get here and so far I'm on my second ISP. The first hardly worked (it was terribly slow) so my room mate called up his boss and asked him to switch it. Now we have HanaroTelecom and its not much better.
I find it works good before 12pm and after 8pm, but between those times it is slower than dialup. Sites like YouTube, Hotmail and Google won't even load most times. I can't even log into secure websites, or sites like Dave's.
Does anyone know of a good ISP? Or how I can get more out of this one? |

I use KT Megapass. It's cool. I have no problems for the most part. It's 10Mbps down and 4 up. The thing you have to remember is that if you are accessing sites from outside of Korea, the trans-pacific cables which carry the data are probably not high-speed, so you'll get lower speeds. The highest speeds will come from Korean sites and Korean servers.

KT Megapass is great. I'm with Qrix now and it's been great (only had it less than a week though).
The worst I had was Kangnam Cable Company when I was living in Nonhyeon. Had the same problem with Youtube, 5 minutes waiting for a 2 minute video to buffer. Avoid them. |

Just called them today and they actually spoke good English. Even though their hold announcement is "It is a lot of inquiring call now." |

Thanks Huffdaddy!
OK, everyone using KT or Megapass should write this down now:
How to contact KT in English: 02-520-7800
Stick it on your computer.
Perhaps it should be in the FAQ, along with a sticky on how to use the phones and get Internet service in Korea.
I had two problems hit at once. Something apparently went wrong with the internet junction on my floor, because I saw someone fiddling with the wiring/optical at the junction box, but he didn't speak English.
This did not solve the problem. I still had the sign in page, which I had never had since I was first hooked up.
I also, coincidentally, got a call from KT asking to confirm my bank account number for automatic payment withdrawals. I know this because a co-teacher called them up. No money was transferred in the next day or two, so I am not sure why they did this. The problem persisted.
So finally I got someone else to call KT in Korean to report my lack of Internet service. I was supplied with a logon and password, apparently somewhat generic, which the first KT guy probably used when he hooked me up. Now when I turn on the computer I go right on to the Internet again, no sign on page.
I do not have a modem between the wall and the computer. Some people in the neighborhood with high speed Megapass do. When they have a problem they just flick the power switch to the modem on and off. And it resets.
I seem to have Megapass lite, and they have a more expensive version?
At any rate, I hope this helps others if they get into the same problem. |
