I stayed at Asha Guesthouse for several days back in August. No problems, clean, felt safe, pretty quiet, friendly people, great travel advice, book exchange...

I did get approached by a bisexual male hooker walking back from dinner one night, but I was with a gay guy who had used said hooker's services before, so... |
What part of the city is this place in? |
It's pretty far out, near Chatuchak Weekend Market, about a 15 min walk from SkyTrain, second to the last stop or something?
Frankly, I'm usually traveling as a solo female and prefer to be a bit away from the main backpacking drags. |

I stayed at Suk 11 Guesthouse in Bangkok off of Sukhumvit Road, Soi 11. Steps away from a Skytrain station (Nana) and it was hands down, the best guesthouse I stayed at in all of Thailand. Everyone on the staff is super friendly, helpful and hospitable and they all speak English. The rooms are spartan, but comfortable and spotlessly clean, and they all have AC. You will meet tons of travelers from all over the world - all age groups and all types, not just backpackers. The location is perfect due to very convenient Skytrain access and it's also within walking distance of tons of nightlife. I really can't recommend the place enough! It's a world apart from most of the guesthouses on Khao San Road! When I stayed there back in 2003, it was a very popular place, but it wasn't on the map yet. But ever since Lonely Planet raved about it, I hear the place fills up quickly. I've recommended the place to at least four of my friends, and they all loved staying there as much as I did. When I go back to Bangkok, I will most definitely stay there again...imho, it's better than any hotel for 1000 baht a night. You won't be spending much time in your room anyway! PM me if you have more questions!

p.s. I just realized that several others also suggested Suk 11 in this thread! (lol) |

Yeah suk11 is cool. Though I'm not such a fan of Sukumvit itself. Nana is not that far by skytrain to Siam Square where I mainly hang out in BKK. Wendy house is even closer and also close to skytrain. I'd happily stay at either again. Though I'd probably lean towards wendy house, because as unique and cool as suk11 is, sukumvit just doesn't hold any interest for me |

Oops! I was under the impression that this would be your first time in Bangkok! (lol) Have fun! I can't wait to get back there myself! |

not my first time, but first couple of times I stupidly stayed in inconvenient parts of the city, even though the staff were very helpful and I achieved my goal of avoiding KSR. Thanks to the board I checked out suk11 this time and it was great. heard about wendy house from people in thailand though i think it was mentioned on this thread too. |

Well, I have decided on Hotel Ibis Huamark Bangkok based on a recommendation from a friend. I got three nights for 3,960 baht, or US$114.58. It's probably good for a stopover since it's only 20km from the airport, but well, my friend said he stayed there and that it was good.
I booked through directrooms.com. |

| This place is a little expensive but its excellent service more than makes up for it. I stayed there and had an excellent time. It's really relaxing and the staff is extremely helpful. http://www.phranakorn-nornlen.com/ |

| Khaosan road sucks and is only for idiots who arer afraid to experience thailand.. there is nothing thai about it.. it is nothing more than a backpackers gettho. real sleazy and a waste of time if you want to experience thailand. Try the bossotel hotel.. near the river.. good rooms.. no hookers.. no backpacker freaks.. |

Where is this "real" Thailand? Sukhumvit? Siam Square? A beach resort? Some boring-ass provincial town outside of Bangkok?
To me, Khaosan is part of the "real" Thailand experience as much as anywhere else, even if it's not the same. Whether you enjoy it or not is particular to you. My feeling is Khaosan rd is a decent place to visit once in awhile if you're in Bangkok, but I don't like staying around there. |

I agree- go there but don't stay there. Have a beer (and there are great falafel on the road there) and watch the scene. It too is part of Thailand, and priceless. Great for picture taking, too. |
