A small country of 5,000,000 people. World's leader in wind power. A country that saved all of its Jewish population during the Holocaust. A country which said 'no thanks' to the Brussels Euro. A country that thumbed its nose at a billion plus cultists by defending free speech. And now, a country that will challenge an increasingly totalitarian Russia for primacy over the Arctic....

As an American, I'd be flattered if they'd ever entertain the idea of becoming the 51'st state.....Although sadly, don't think they're interested...

Arctic battle heats up as Denmark joins fray

By ADRIAN BLOMFIELD IN MOSCOW

The race for control of the Arctic gathered pace yesterday as Denmark prepared to challenge Russia's bid for the North Pole and Canada vowed to defend its "sovereignty" over the region's frozen waters.

Spurred into action by a Russian underwater mission last month to plant a flag on the ocean floor beneath the Pole, Danish scientists will depart for the Arctic tomorrow to pursue Copenhagen's rival claim. Over the next month, they will seek evidence that the Lomonosov Ridge, a 1,200-mile, underwater mountain range running close to the Pole, is a geographical extension of Greenland, a Danish possession.

The mission will strain relations between Denmark and Russia, which claims to have found evidence linking the ridge to Siberia.

Both countries will seek adjudication from a United Nations commission about who owns the territory.

Facing accusations he had ceded advantage to the Russians, Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper vowed yesterday: "We either use it or lose it," he said. "And make no mistake, we intend to use it.,The Arctic is believed to have vast energy resources.

Denmark predicted confidently that it would emerge the winner.

"The preliminary investigations done so far are very promising," said Helge Sander, the Danish science minister.

"There are things suggesting that Denmark could be given the North Pole
.,Canada and the US are also at odds over control of the Northwest Passage, which could become more accessible to shipping as the polar icecap continues to melt.

In a separate development, the US dismissed a Russian claim to have flown over a US military base on the Pacific island of Guam in the first such mission since the end of the Cold War.

The US Pacific Fleet commander said Russian bombers did not come within 300 miles of Guam. ( The Daily Telegraph)

Yeah, I wouldn't care if Denmark were to somehow win out in this race to the North Pole. As long as Russia doesn't get it I'm happy.

I hope the Danes get it.

Only crazy muslims could hate a country like Denmark.
